File (Windows) Explorer start up in 8.1

In past Windows versions, including 8, one could follow this MS advice...

"To change the way Windows Explorer opens (copy and paste)
one of the examples below to the target portion of a shortcut
    and name it Windows Explorer.

    Examples:
Open Windows Explorer with My Computer as the root with
all drives visible and "My Computer" selected.
    C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /e,/n,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}"

    (other examples followed)

In Windows 8.1 the "target" box is grayed out. File Explorer always starts with the THIS PC folder highlighted...
and I would like to change that. How?

    Hello Borgus,

If you like, you could also create a new shortcut with the target location you like, pin that to the taskbar instead, then unpin the default File Explorer icon from the taskbar.

However, in Windows 8.1 Preview, the default pinned File Explorer icon on the taskbar opens to "This PC" (new name for "Computer") now.

Doggone it, Brink. Why didn't I think of that? ^_^ Thanks.

I'm the opposite as I want "This PC" to be displayed but when you "Show Libraries" it defaults to the libraries view. Creating a custom shortcut and pinning it to the taskbar doesn't work for me because it loads a separate file explorer icon on the taskbar. Since target is greyed out in the default pinned file explorer shortcut, can we modify it in the registry to get around this?

Hello Meth, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm not aware of a way to not have a custom one open a new icon with each next one grouped to the new one each time a new one is opened.

LOL, I thought that would have been a good tongue twister.

I'm not aware of a way to have the new pinned custom explorer icon on the taskbar to stop opening a new icon on the taskbar each time it's opened.

Well, the Explorer Icon which shows up on the taskbar is actually the Libraries Icon, it opens to the Libraries- If you click on it directly.

But you can drag a shortcut of My Computer icon down to the taskbar, and it will add to the Libraries icon. Then you can Right Click on the Libraries Icon and it will allow you to choose what you wanna open.

If you have no other items "pinned" - Then right Clicking on the Library icon will allow you to choose "File Explorer"

Tru dat., You could pin one to the jump list of the default File Explore icon on the taskbar.
