It adds exactly 2 features. There is a button to click on instead of just going to the corner and clicking on the small tile that appears. Right-click adds exactly one feature, an easy way to shutdown/reboot.

It does not provide the nice compact well organized Start Menu of Windows 7 and previous versions of Windows. Fortunately Classic Shell and others still provide full featured start buttons/menus.

It's certainly not the start button that we had on Windows7.

that's because its win8 ,to each there own ,I didn't use the win7 start /all programs very often ,so I don't mind the new win8 Start ,kind of getting to like it .

I guess the new start in win8.1 will be easier for the average user to find and find the shutdown

Sure, but it's about time that haters start giving the new start menu a chance, because it is actually faster than the old one.

Now it's even easier, as you can make the tiles very small and gather the icons in folders very easily.

It really is faster than the old start menu, just give it a chance and forget classic shell and those ugly things.

    Get modern.

The Start Screen is NOT the Start Menu. Having a separate tile for each and every possible executable file related to an installed program (where we get work done, not an app) is a real mess. I've used Windows 8 since the day it was released. I do go to the Start Screen to access those few Apps that are useful. The new small tiles are nice, about the size of an icon on the desktop, but are somewhat less valuable since there are no words to go with them. The Start Screen is simply no proper replacement for the Start Menu.

If you want the best of both worlds then provide both worlds. Along with the other improved features on Windows 8 providing both "start schemes" would make a lot of sense. A convertible without top doesn't provide dual functionality, a convertible with a top that is easily operated is a wonderful automobile.

That's not a joke to me, there were other, bigger ones.

It was expected to go to the Screen instead of the Menu... just like Win7 File Recovery that was killed, with what do I replace that one?
