Win8 Control Panel Empty-My Docs-Library problem

Thanks. I will test that when it occurs again. I am not running anything but standard Windows 8 and no unusual programs or anything newly installed anywhere near the time this started occurring (last Tues., June 25). I wonder how that will affect the issue that occurs simultaneously with the My Docs, Libraries, My Computer icons missing?

I'll see what I can do to determine a cause, as per your notes. I think, though, I'm going to try the "Reset" tomorrow or Monday. Unfortunately, that won't find the answer. If that doesn't fix it, so much for Microsoft's idea of a full Win8 "automatic" reinstall.

Ran updated TDSSKILLER and Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (Drivers, sectors, system). No issues.

Ran Windows Defender--I know--not a favorite. Giving Microsoft its shot at this. No threats found.

"gpedit.msc" isn't found as per the instructions from page 1/the website posted.
Pictures: (And a note in regard to things said previous about icons: these newer pics I've been saving are not appearing as thumbnails, only a generic "picture" icon--while the problem "is not" occurring.)

CRAP! Then you are running something less than Windows 8 Pro. I'll ask Brink if there is a way to install Group Policy Editor into a Lesser version of Windows.

It's the same problem with XP Home versions, Vista home versions, and 7 Home POSses. They are MISSING all kinds of stuff that the OS cannot be fixed without.

I think the impression I am getting is that "Refresh" will not fix this, only a clean install. I'm glad you had no Virii but you may have something new that is not being caught yet. I'd like to see a list of your startup programs, they can be found in the Task Manager under Startup. Or by running cCleaner, go to Tools and Startup, you can save a list of the startup items.

Maybe I can send you the missing file, I'm asking about this now. Having HOME versions of any OS curtails 90% of the available ways you can fix it. Maybe you should do the anytime upgrade to Pro

Ok there is no Gpedit in "base" versions of Win 8, or any other version of Windows, all the way back to XP. HOWEVER, you can edit the keys. Use this to find the Reg Keys that control if Control Panel is being blocked, then change the keys in your system accordingly:

    Thanks again XweAponX.

"Refresh" won't fix it. I tried that before coming here. That is why I've said my next step is "Reset" and asked about its implications in another thread.

I finally got a reply in the "official" forum. The post just said to create a new user account and check that to see if it occurs as general troubleshooting.

Also, he asked if I remember making any changes, which as stated here, I did not around that period, only basic use done many times before. Whether or not, of course, if some specific action that appeared "normal" caused it is another thing.

Also, of course, he suggested contacting the manufacturer if under warranty, but that is a whole other step than asking here or elsewhere for some possible fix. I'm not tangling with a company before I eliminate my obvious options they'll throw in my face anyway.

    Hello everyone,

I'm "glad" to find another guy who has the exact same problem as me! This problem occurs for me since I have installed Windows 8 in january. This drive me crazy as I have no clue to solve it...

This problem starts after some minutes of use... I don't do any particular task at this point... I still don't understand how to recreate it, it seems to appear randomly!

Symptoms : problem with icons, no thumbnails on shortcuts, directory tree ans control panel is empty, etc.

I can have an access to the drives when I right click on the task bar and select a folder here.

Solutions I've tried : new installation of Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 7. I also supposed this problem was due to a corrupt file on a hard drive, so I format my second drive (HDD) but the problem is still there (note : my first drive is a SSD).

I just noticed on your screenshot a similar processus "Persistence Module" of Intel... Maybe this is an idea?

Any suggestion would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Libraemy:

I've only had the problem since last Tuesday. I've had the computer (pre-installed with 8) for about 5 months. What brand is your computer, HP (see HP in one of your pics)? I am using a Toshiba. If you've read all of my posts, I've detailed my situation. Only one other member here has noted the same problem, and it was not solved here, nor has he noted his current situation.

I've posted elsewhere with no solutions. Many searches have yielded no results.

Please keep coming back. Soon I'll do a reset, but I'm putting it off at the moment. I'd like to know what it is, but I need a computer that I can have trust in.

Yes I read all your posts here and was very disapointed in seeing no solution yet... I thought it might be interesting for you to know you're not the only to have this issue! Actually I read on a french forum a guy who had the same problem and apparently solved this issue by removing a corrupted file on his drive (The explorer might crash when it creates its thumbnail or something like that). I personnaly can't figure any files dommaged on my drive, the other idea would be that my SSD is falling down...
