Big problems after 8.1

After upgrading to 8.1 I'm having all sorts of problems. Programs and apps won't open. The side setting panel won't open. I could open the This PC window but its blank. The Start page appears ok at first but if I try to view all programs it just goes blank and I can't do anything else. Anyone else having trouble like this?

Edit: after multiple reboots it seems to be working fine this time. I'm afraid to reboot now though! :D

Keep us posted, if you find out why it is doing this, it's something we all need to know. You are the first person in here I have seen admit they have installed 8,1, so you are kind of "on point" with this, so keep plugging at it, your insights will be valuable to us all later on! I'm sorry I can't be of much help because I have decided to wait until I am completely familiar with 8. I simply don't know what the differences are yet.

Yeah, it's no good. I got lucky with that one boot, then I had to reboot after a Windows Update and the same stuff is happening. I had a very similar problem in 8 a couple of times, but a simple reboot fixed it every time there. I also find that it takes a long time to boot while 8 was always very fast.

Does anyone know how to boot in Safe Mode? F8 doesn't seem to be working. Thanks.

It seems that if i leave it on the lock screen for a while at boot, then log in it works. I have no idea why.

I think the assumption was that it would no longer be needed. That has turned out to be a fallacy for sure.

BootUI Tuner makes booting into Safe Mode or Recovery easy:

Thanks for the link, It will make it a lot easier to figure out what program 8.51 doesn't like, assuming it's a Startup program since I loaded into Safe Mode without any of the problems I was having.

So the past of couple of times I booted it was fine with nothing special done by me. However I still can't right-click on any folder or zip file, including the recycle bin. Whenever I do it appears that Explorer crashes and restarts itself. I guess that's what happens, any folders I have open close themselves and any icons I can see, including on the task bar, disappear for a second, then come back.

I had exactly the same issue after trying an upgrade to 8.0

Never figured it out. Did a clean reinstall in the end.
