Question for those who have upgraded to 8.1

Doubts

I have a ton of apps installed atm

(cs5 suite, visual studio 2010, steam with 100+ games, skype, etc).

Will the upgrade damage any of these installations?

Any advice from anyone who's gone about it, how damaging is it?

Thanks !

If you update through the Windows Store, you'll probably keep everything. But be sure to read the FAQ on the Microsoft site... this is a preview (not final) and even Microsoft warns that bad things can happen and you need to have backups.

Windows 8.1 Preview - Microsoft Windows

and

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/27188-windows-8-1-preview-download-install.html

That said, I updated this afternoon and all my apps came through okay.

If you update via the ISO that is available for download, you will NOT keep any apps or settings after installing.

Unless you can update from 8.1 Preview to 8.1 RTM you may have to do a Clean install of 8.1 RTM when it's available, which means you will lose all installed apps. Your best bet is to create a backup image before updating to 8.1 Preview then restore and update to 8.1 RTM when it is released.

I may be all wet but this how it looks to me from what I've read.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I updated through the store from 8 to 8.1 and now testing. First big problem, NIS 2012 is not compatible with 8.1. Looks like everything else is still there but need to test them all.

I won't go thru the store, as I want physical media. And the ISO is STILL not available.

THAT is pretty slack, IMO.

I downloaded from here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/download-previewand did not lose anything. But I wasn't happy with 8.1. First of all it wasslower than 8 and after running it a few minutes, my system froze. I did createa system image before I installed 8.1 so I just restored my image. I haven'theard of anyone else having the problems that I had, so maybe it was just mysystem that had the problem. But I did not lose any apps. I'm curious to knowif anyone else had the same problems as I did.

I updated though the store, the first attempt failed with an 0x8020002e error. Another attempt after that also failed with the same error. After a reboot it finally installed. Other than having to log back into a couple of forums everything seems to be working OK. I noticed a Windows.old folder on my OS drive that wasn't there before. it was about 4 gig. Disk cleanup got ride of it. Something else I noticed was WEI is now MIA from the system screen. I've only been playing around with 8.1 for a couple of hours so far.

My understanding is that if you go from an existing Win 8 build to 8.1 you retain everything. This also applies when updating the final 8.1 release while using the consumer preview (only for existing Win8 users). You have to update the preview through the store to keep all settings. Using an ISO will not keep settings, apps, etc. regardless of os.

If you are going to use 8.1 on anything other then Win8 you may have to reinstall apps, settings, etc. Even when the official release comes out you will have to do a fresh install if you're using the consumer preview or not. Only for non Win8 os's.

I installed 8.1 on my laptop (Win8) to test this and it did not remove anything (apps, settings, pics, games, etc). Obviously I didn't have to re-download anything either. Atleast not yet :D

It's real simple. You can upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 preview release. Nothing has to be reinstalled.

However, you CANNOT go from the 8.1 Preview release to 8.1 RTM when it's released. This is when the reinstall of apps will have to occur.

If you elect instead to not update to the preview release now and simply wait for the RTM, you can upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 RTM without having to reinstall anything.

So, if you play with the 8.1 Preview, you WILL end up reinstalling apps down the road.

I will be waiting for the ISO cause I will install it clean to a new partition to be able to test it and to play with it. I will wait for the Final to install it on top of my Win 8.

The ISO is available to MSDN and TechNet members. It's not available (AFAIK) to the general public yet.

As with all pre-beta software, and even some beta software, it's not going to be supported by software makers, and there are going to be bugs and problems. Just because some people have no problems doesn't mean others will not.

If you are worried, then you are probably not a good candidate to test beta software. Wait for the final. If you're willing to take risks, then only you can test your own configuration.

I had to uninstall then re-install NIS 2012 and it now works except for the Norton Toolbar in IE-11. It is enabled in the add-ons but will not show in the browser window. Windows still complains that it is not compatible but is working fine. I have also tried NIS 20 (2013) but same result. Toolbar works in FF so not too bad for a Beta system. I am staying with NIS 2012 as I use the Local Vault.
