    Random Disappearance of Hibernation Option

    Hey everyone,

I have a random/strange thing happening on my Windows 8 Pro (x64). I have set up the system settings so that when I close the lid my laptop goes to hibernation. However, when I wake up my laptop from hibernation, from time to time, hibernation option disappears from system settings (I attached to screenshots). And, to get it back, I need to restart the laptop. This does not happen all the time. But when it happens, I don't get any hibernation option. As a result, closing the lid puts the laptop into sleep rather than hibernation and that is not very convenient when I want to leave fast. To get hibernation option back I need to restart my laptop.

Is anyone experiencing a similar situation? I have checked the forums for a possible solution but I couldn't find anything. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

    Cheers,
    Mustafa.

Hello Mustafa, and welcome to Eight Forums.

When "Hibernate" is missing, it may have been disabled by something. Check to see if enabling hibernate using the tutorial below may keep it enabled for you. Odd that restarting the PC restores it.

    Hope this helps for now,

Just because Hibernate does not show in that area, does not mean it is not active. If you install Start8 or other Start Menu add-on, it will show up on the Desktop power button. You can make sure though Desktop- Display Options, Screen Saver, Power Options, Advanced Power Options:

After you have set that, you can choose "Hibernate" as the default power down in the Start Menu:

I just tested this - My system indeed went into Hibernation and came back out successfully.

Thanks for the quick reply Shawn. I have tried this tutorial before and it works for a time. And, I lose the hibernation option again randomly. As I said, restarting fixes the problem. Though I wish I could solve this problem and the wifi (that's the other thing that bothers me).

Do you have any other suggestions?

    Thanks

Hey. Thanks for the quick reply. I don't think I want to install an add-on like that. I know I can enable that option through power settings. Normally, I have that option already turned on (see the attachment). But, the problem is it disappears randomly. I don't understand why.

    Thanks for the tip though

    Cheers,
    Mustafa.

I've NEVER had Hibernation show up in the area you are showing me. Never, ever, ever, never.

I always access it through the Main Power Button on the Box, and it always works. So, set it up so that your main Box power button is where you access it, and don't worry about it vanishing, because the fact that it shows up on your machine randomly, is a fluke - It's never been shown there on my machine from the first day I installed 8 until today. I just never use that area to shut down my machine. But in regards to now wanting to run Start8 or Classic Shell, that's your prerogative, I refuse to use the Metro area at all. But I'm telling you this now, you will never see Hibernate there, it never has been shown there on my two 8 machines. That you are getting it, is unusual behaviour for 8.

Actually it is normal to have "Hibernate" in the Power menu like in his screenshot.

I'm sure it is, but I've never seen it there, I swear! I'll check on the Asus Laptop and see if it is there.

It's probably an issue they have to fix.

I believe you that it's not on your laptop. It could be anything from hibernate not enabled, hibernate not selected to appear in Power menu, your laptop may not support hibernate, etc.....

Checking now- NOPE, it's not listed. But it IS turned on and active, I just resumed and then re-hibernated, Boom. Booted in 5 seconds, shut off in less than a second.

It may be because by default, I set up the physical power button on the PC or Laptop to hibernate. That may be why it is vanishing on their computer. It's like I said, it normally does not show. This makes the fifth Windows 8 I have installed or set up, and the Hibernate never shows from the Charms Power Panel. That's what I mean by "Never, ever, ever, never". It's been this way on a wide variety of computers, and this laptop is the newest system I have ever worked on.
