I just bought a new computer with windows 8 and I need to down grade to 7 so my programs will run
Is there a way to back up windows 8 to be reloaded later?
I am going to buy a windows 7 cd to load on the computer but In will later need to reload windows 8

The easiest way would be to buy a new hard drive, and take the hard drive that is in there out and stick it in a safe place- And install Windows 7 to the new drive. That's probably what I would do.

Or, you could back it up to a new hard drive using Acronis True Image. However, when/if you restore it back it may become deactivated because the hard drive is different. I've only had that happen once with Windows 7, it usually should not happen. But just to make sure, buy a backup hard drive which is the same as the one which is in your system now.

What I would do though, is keep Windows 8 in there, and use the Start Menu replacements you can get from Stardock or others. Stardock is 5 bucks, Classic shell is free, but it is not as good. That way, the system will boot straight to Desktop and you can bypass the Metro screen and Lock screen. Most of us in here do this.

I have never heard of a single program that works in Windows 7 but not Windows 8, other than "hack" type programs that hack the OS to do things Microsoft did not intend.

Which software do you have that you think doesn't work?

I havent had a single program that I ran on XP Vista or 7 fail to run on 8, including the ones that Mystere mentions, which I don't do too often, just to test things out maybe but then they get deleted instantly. If you want 7, just make a dual boot system, I agree. Or what Jary said, install 7 as a clean install and re-install 8 later.

I installed 8 on a whim, Ive kept it on my most used machines.

I like the hard drive swap idea the best as it would only cost $54.00 to replace the hard drive compared to $1000.
to replace the Adobe programs.

Illustrator CS works just fine on Windows 8. I don't know about Photoshop 5.5 since that's a VERY old version (unless you mean CS 5.5), but it would surprise me if it doesn't. Have you used the compatibility settings?

Adobe says there are not aware of any compatibility issues in any CS product 5.5 or 6.

Have you gone to the Adobe forums and asked for help in getting those Adobe programs installed? I think you would find people on the Adobe forums with the specific answers to installing those programs in Win 8. You could also try searching the net with your favorite search engine.
