Dear All,

I have a system file say ab.sys (90 KB) under C\Windows\System32\Drivers

every time my PC reboots, the system file gets overwritten with an updated version of bigger size (150 KB). For some reason, I do not want that.

Please let me know how to prevent that..may be by setting denied permission on the ab.sys file..is there a way?

Thanks,
Troy.

Yes, this is possible but I would question whether this was a good solution to your issue. A better way would be to determine why this was taking place, not prevent it with changing permissions. When you start changing permissions on system files you had better know what you are doing.

I would be doing that just for this single sys file alone..i hope that it is safe. can you pls tell me how to achieve my goal?

No, it's not a Virus. Pls see below link from some other site
Prolific Comm To USB driver not working

and the below quoted portion from there

I have to say that the base procedure is ok, very thanks. I must to add, that the file added by drtedrted in this thread is ok. We don't need install on windows7. Just replace ser2pl64.sys. A tip, dennied the permissions of ser2pl64.sys to system, because system will try to update that file everytime you connect again the usb-serial converter.

That is not the same file though. You may want to change the permissions on the AB.SYS file to match the permissions for the rest of the files in your Driver Library. I could not find any reference to that file on the internet, there are none. I looked deep into 3 different search engines. I'll look some more.

I've checked four more search engines and not ONE result for "ab.sys" - are you sure this is the exact name of the file? Everything I have seen indicates a Virus NAMED "AB"

Allright - I have found one, and only one, reference to any file named "AB.SYS" and here it is, and it says nothing. No indication what it belongs to, no other information at all other than it is probably "safe"

ab.sys Details. Is this file safe? Check the directory

thanks mate..but guess I am out of luck with my device..the chip inside (PL-2303HXA) does NOT work with Win 8 :(

pls see this link
Products

NOTE:

  • Windows 8 is NOT supported in PL-2303HXA and PL-2303X EOL chip versions.

I will buy some other Win 8 compatible device.

But thanks a lot for all the hard research done.

May I ad another piece of incompatible HW to your colection. It's a TCT Mobile Limited, One Touch X090s Alcatel 3G modem. Drivers are dead duck. Could not find them, install and use. On w7 works perfectly. Heck, it works even on Linux Mint.

Too Bad, you MAY be able to fool Windows 8 into using the Windows 7 drivers. this is the first time I have heard of devices not being supported in 8, I run three computers with very old hardware, and I'm lucky I have gotten everything to work. We should make a permanent post somewhere and list all of the devices that have been documented that don't work.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Wall, no big deal, I just unlocked an Huawei 3G modem from other provider and use that when out of reach of WiFi. 3G modems work pretty much everywhere where cell phone service is available and that means whole Europe. The thing with this modem is that drivers and software are hard coded and there's no way to get to it. So the drivers that work for W7 install but do not work with W8 for some reason.
Anyway, you are right, there is so incredibly large driver base for such a new OS. You'll never believe the stuff I got working on W8, some raelly ancient stuff. Like a HP 4L laser printer, and even Epson FX80 dot matrix. The important thing is to be connected to internet when connecting new device and in 99% drivers (not always optimal ) will be found and installed. Last time I installed Win8 here on my computer, I had all kinds of devices connected and by the time win installation finished I had all the drivers installed, even the one or two I forgot that are connected.
One more goof up was when windows found wrong drivers for my K.World TV card but fortunately Win7 drivers worked..
