    New PC Installation

    Hello,

I have recently bought and installed a Windows 8 license on my PC, but I can't figure out for the life of me why on a PC the default programs for music, movies & photos need to take me away from what I was doing and go full screen? They also seem to lock my mouse in their full screen mode and I find no way to use my mouse (or any other way) to switch applications.

I thought Windows was supposed to be easy to work with?

Wait for 8.1, it seems that you'll be able to do more.

If it will bring a configuration choice screen at installation time (PC vs other devices) that would be great

You might want to install Classic Shell :

Sounds cool (currently I use Pokki for start menu)

Does it also remove associations for those awful apps? My main annoyance is that I have to waste time changing default programs for my files ("Music" is the default for mp3's, replacing even Windows Media Player) and convincing the system that I don't want to use their screen-grabbing waste and leave my working area.

You will still have to change file associations & default programs.
Since you have already started on that it won't be too hard to finish it up.
    & once changed you're done.
