Windows update caused general problems - programs crashing

After spending an inordinate amount of time getting my old applications to work with Win 8 (and giving up for some) I finally had a system that seemed to be working. Then File Explorer started to freeze. I saw that I had not installed the recent updates. So I did this. Now a whole bunch of programs are simply crashing on me. First it was Symantec Framework, then the AMD catalyst. Now whenever I try to reply to or forward an email using Live Essentials I get the same basic message - Windows Live Mail has stopped working. I also cannot open the Photo Gallery (it seems to respond but nothing happens and it is not there on Task Manager). Overall, this new computer, which I bought with Win 8 loaded on it, is essentially useless. I am thinking of getting Win 7 put on it but would like to have a shot at fixing. I guess I cannot do a Refresh because I don't have the Win 8 installation disk. Ideas will be appreciated. I should say that I have nothing much installed (Live Essentials, OpenOffice, which I use consistently, and a few small things that I use rarely).

If it came from the store with Windows 8 installed you don't need a disc.

It should have a recovery drive.

You can Refresh in Settings :

Post back with results. :)

Problem may be fixed

Thanks for hel;p with Refresh - may yet be important.

I uninstalled Live Essentials and re-installed. I started up Photo Gallery. It worked. But the screen went black for an instant and there were some burbling sounds. Then it did it again. And after that all was OK. I tried out the Mail program. The first time through, the same - the program closed down and then re-opened. I tried again. This time it worked. So - I may be back to a usable computer. Really, in this day and age (I have been using computers for nearly 50 years) shouldn't this sort of thing not happen? I think Microsoft has to realize they have two consumer bases - one that is mostly recreational and uses pads etc and the other that uses them professionally. The latter doesn't want apps and fancy crap that doesn't work, but a streamlined system that is reliable. They have mixed the two up in this Windows version and neither user group is impressed!
