Eclipse portable no longer works in Win8?

I swapped a newly-bought ssd into my hdd1 slot, and put the hdd it replaced into my hdd2 slot today. Installed win 8 x64 and did all updates, personal config, etc. Everything seems to be fine and stable.

Problem is, I keep getting the message: "A Java Environment [blah blah] must be available in order to run Eclipse. No Java virtual Machine was found after searching the following locations: C:\EclipsePortable\App\Eclipse\jre\bin\javaw.exe javaw.exe in your current PATH"
when trying to run Eclipse Portable.

Now the same installation package works fine in win 7, which I re-checked by booting into my hdd. In win7, Task Manager does not show any java related processes when running portable Eclipse, to which I assume is part of the portability. Thus interestingly enough, there was never a jre folder in the installation, and certainly no javaw.exe, so I'm not too sure what's going on here, let alone what's wrong.

Anyways, using my win7 system, I can actually launch the portable eclipse I installed on my win8 ssd just fine. Same goes for if I install onto a flashdrive: works in win7 on hdd, gives the above error in win8 on ssd.

Regular eclipse, using java jdk installed in program files does work on win8, I just prefer the portable version.

Thanks for any help given, I'm entirely outta my league on this one.

program in question: Download Eclipse Portable from SourceForge.net

Let me check this out, BRB. There may be dot net issues. Is your Windows 8 upgraded from 7 or a fresh install?

Oh My, that is a large download - Sourceforge is notorious for slow downloads, maybe because people are always downloading the great stuff they got, like VLC. I also need to read their project page to see what this does.

All Right - The version you posted looks like it is an OUTDATED version, try a newer version of it. I'm going to try to find the newest one, the one you posted was slightly old, but not much.

There are also several different editions, try the Classic edition rather than the Java edition. My Bad, that was classic, and maybe the newest one too. I am having some grievous error downloading it, it fails at the end.

    Thanks for the reply.
It's a fresh install, and I tried but couldn't find a newer version.

It finally finished - The errors I am seeing appear to be Dot Net errors, and I know my dot net is fouled up in this machine. I'll try it on my other machine presently. But the one I tried was the Java EE version.

We you getting the errors during INSTALL? Just hit "Ignore" and it will go through - It's Loading now.

Well it Loaded and it Ran. But the version was for Java Devs. Going to try classic now.

    Eclipse portable: easy to do.

Get a new zip (for windows) from here:
    Eclipse Downloads

Then get a new zip (actually tar.gz but for windows) from here:
    Java SE Downloads

Extract the tar.gz jre folder and put it in the extracted eclipse folder.

Put the eclipse folder where you want and create a shortcut/launch eclipse.exe from there.

Works all the time here as well and you don't need to install java (in the system) with this method.

I got Classic and it is going in to my WD My Book now... No Errors during Install.

OK It is Running - So Hopachi is Correct. Just update your Java.

    It runs just fine.

You may have either a bad Java or Dot Net install, for Java all you have to do is clean that cache with all of the thousands of files in it, anything you need will get put back into it.
