Extra free space after installing Win 8 Pro 64-bit

    Dear All,

I have a query which might sound very stupid. But forgive my ignorance since I am using Win 8 Pro 64-bit version for the first time.

Previously I had Win 8 Pro 32-bit installed. There was an internal 250 GB SATA HDD connected as a secondary drive. No partitions. It showed me like 150 mb or so free in that.
Today I installed Win 8 64-bit. And when I connected that 250 GB drive as secondary, it showed me around 800 mb free.

My questions is- the extra free space where did it come from? is it due to 64-bit version of the OS installed now?

    Thanks,
    Troy.

No its not from switching to 64 bit. A screen shot of your expanded disk management screen would help. If the drive had no partitions it should have showed 250 GB free.

You MAY have had a pagefile.sys on that drive, or a Hiberfile.sys, that were deleted due to the upgrade. Check your Settings in the Advanced System Settings Panel, right click on My Computer and choose "Properties" - And try what the other guy said too.

Your drive may have been resized as well, Windows 7 for me would always make a 100 MB Partition on the System Drive.

thanks for your response guys..the drive had no partitions but it sure had lots of data in it..in 32-bit it showed about 150 mb free..and pagefile.sys was not on this drive.
When I installed 64-bit, the drive was not connected. I later connected it and found that free space now being shown is more than 150mb.

{Edit} XweAponX has provided a good pointer though...now i remember there was a hidden SYS file on that drive..so there's a high chance the extra free space is attributed to that SYS file..anyways i don't actually see any of my data missing..so guess all good and i can close this thread thanks guys.

Your drive most certainly had at least one partition, you could not have accessed it and written data to it if it didn't.

yes John, it had just one partition alone..meaning the total 250GB was a single partition.

Just as a heads up, when somebody says a drive is "un partitioned". Most people take that to mean the drive has no partitions at all and is blank. An un partitioned drive cannot have any DATA on it. If a drive has at least one partition on it, it is partitioned. In your case I'm guessing you were meaning to say it wasn't split up into more than one partition. No big deal now that's its sorted out, just something for future reference.
