if you mean IE favorites ,then the answer is yes, in win8 they are found here ,C:\Users\your user name\,you will see a folder called favorites ,just copy the whole favorites folder to a usb drive or such and copy/pater it to win8 when asked if you want to overwrite file say yes

I must have succeeded in doing this because all my old IE Favourites are here, and I went from XP to 8!

I think you can use the option within Internet Explorer (XP) to Export your favourites to a file. Then you can transfer the file to Windows 8 and reimport it. I can't remember exactly where the option is in IE8, but in IE10 the equivalent option is in the "File" menu and is called "Import and Export" (which is also what you'd use when you arrive in Windows 8) so look for something similar in XP.

But to be on the safe side I'd copy the folder as suggested above too - note that in XP it will be within
C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>
and not
C:\Users\<Username>

i still don't get it. i'm going to wait till next month and pay $100.00 to have the geek squad at best buy do it for me. but first i have to find the favorites thing. and i'm still having trouble remembering what my password is for my email is.
people my age already have short term memory problems and now some nut comes up with this idea that people
should sigh in every day you start the computer?

well i had to stop using the windows 8 computer because i ran into another problem. i'm on SSI and use the calender
on XP to remind me when to take my meds (X 4 each day) and when my dr. appointment are. but when i tried to use the calender it saidi had to sign in with a password, which i could not remember. that calender is 50% of the reason for my having a computer. without that. the computer goes back in the box. now when i first started this thing i had 2 ways to go and i clicked on microsoft instad of local. should i have done it different? can i change that? can i use the CD that came with the computer to start over again? i cannot remember to sign into a calender everyday, which means i will forget to take my meds, and my health will suffer. i don't do that with XP, i did not do that with windows ME, and i'm not risking my health over a machine.

This will let you in windows without signing in but for the calendar app you will still need to sign in. The other third party non-metro programs will work, just don't set any password on them.

for most things in win8 mouse over the lower left corner and right click to bring up the list .
not sure why you want a link to favorites on the desktop ,you would open internet explorer and open the favorites to use them .

also if you right click on the start screen you will get a show all apps everyting is there .
also if you right click on some /most start screen icons you will get an option to pin to desktop taskbar.

also check the link in my signature for win8 tips

Hmmm, good idea about remote desktop connecting... I was just talking to someone about that today.

If anyone wants to volunteer, it would be a GREAT idea to use TeamViewer to remote desktop to commander's PC while doing sending personal messages back and forth here on the site. That would make things a lot easier.

Where you live there should be a Community Service Board.
or a Dept. of social services.

I'm on SSDI.Total disability.
My Community Service Board & Dept. of Social Services help people with special needs.
They even have a group for older people that helps them with computer stuff.
There is a major university here too with a civic minded group(s) that assist in the area.

I have to write things down or I'll forget them.
I take 5 different medications.
Sometimes I can't remember if I took them or not.

My point is, there should be some kind of resources in your area to help you out with stuff. :)
