    *.cpl items not executing

I have several control panel items that do not open. I get a message indicating that they are looking for an associated program.

After some research I figured out how to create a shortcut that opens the control panel item (example:firewall.cpl) by using its canonical name, and its GUID. Example I created a shortcut for default items using "C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{17cd9488-1228-4b2f-88ce-4298e93e0966}" as the target.

However, I really would like the control panel to work properly. I don't know how to move the shortcuts I have created for the *.cpl files that no longer work into control panel. Alternatively, I would like to know if there is a way I can automatically "refresh" my system (without having to reinstall Win 8) so the control panel items work properly.

    Thanks.

    Hello share666,

Downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed .cpl option in the tutorial below will restore the default associations for these, and hopefully fix this issue for you.

    Hope this helps,

Should be Control.exe - It's still there innit? Control.exe is in the "System32" folder of the WIndows directory.

I merged the reg file for cpl. No change. I checked for control.exe. It is there. However, when I execute it directly I get a message saying file has no program associated with it.

What's weird is some of the cpl files execute just fine. Some do not. I can build a shortcut with the correct guid and no problem. I just don't know how to merge it into the existing control panel or if there is a way to "rebuild" the control panel. I've run sfc /scannow and no impact there either.

If this just started recently, then you may be able to do a system restore using a restore point dated before this started to hopefully undo the cause.
