Show Known File Extensions Reverts to Default

Hello all,

I hope this isn't a repeat thread - I didn't find any others that were having this issue.

On the first day I received my laptop, I went into folder options and selected to show hidden folders and show known file extensions just as I have in 7, and Vista before that.

It seems like every few times I log back into my PC, this option has changed itself and decided to hide all file extensions. The showing hidden folders option has not changed back once.

Very strange! I thought it was a registry scan that was reverting the option, but it doesn't seem to be causing the issue.

Any ideas?

Hello TheDailyToker,

You may have unchecked the File name extensions option by mistake in the ribbon in File Explorer as below. It's a global setting, and not just for that folder.

Hope this helps, :)

Thanks for the reply, Brink!

Unfortunately, I have not been able to check this out yet because my hard drive has since crashed. I just got my machine back up and running today, so we'll see if it goes off again and I'll double check myself :)

Howdy!

Well, it happened again. The only things I have done is create a system restore point, install Adobe Reader and also a UNIX to print program for work. Is it possible that Adobe altered these settings upon installation? I work with the folder ribbon up now, so it wouldn't be a slip of the cursor.. Very curious!

I shouldn't be doing any more installations for some time, so if it reverts I'll take note of what I did, or dig through event viewer if it comes down to it...

Today is the 2nd Tuesday Windows Update day, so it may be possible that one of the updates reset the settings. ??

Ah! That makes more sense to me than Adobe going in there. I completely forgot about that.. the Windows update snuck in on me when I did a quick warm boot. This hasn't tweaked your settings, though?

If you use Microsoft account and have another PC with extensions off, such behavior may be a result of File Explorer settings synchronization. See Win+W - sync

Yes, this is it, Shawn. In fact, it syncs most Explorer settings (not folder views, though) + Quick Access Bar. Pretty handy, but annoying when you experiment on a VM :)

Hey guys, looks like it happened again. And I have no idea why. I've done nothing out of the ordinary, haven't installed the most recent Windows update yet and have not installed any new software. This is driving me nuts. It has to be something I'm doing since nobody else is having this issue, but I have a fairly regular routine with this PC and it doesn't happen extremely often. I'll have to keep a closer eye on it and try to figure out when it's happening so I can figure out what's triggering it.

In addition, make note of anything that you have set to run on a schedule as well to see if one may be a cause.

Will do, Brink. I do have file history on, backing up from one internal drive to another automatically. I hope to catch it early enough so I can dig through event viewer and find out exactly what is causing this.

Thank you for your continued help.
