    No ribbon in File Explorer

I use an alternative file manager so I don't run explorer.exe very often. But today I had a need to, and when I opened it, I found that the ribbon interface was missing.

Any ideas what might be going on?

The file manager I use does take over all file and folder operations by default, but even turning off the "Explorer replacement" option, the ribbon remains missing...

I believe that is because of your Explorer replacement. That window is not the normal Windows 8 File Explorer window, missing parts are essential Explorer tools needing some registry editing to not to show them.

I guess it's a choice you have to make, use your replacement and lose some features of the original or settle with native Explorer.

I'll check with the devs of Directory Opus, but I'm not certain that's the cause...

    Thanks!

Directory Opus devs confirm that their app is not to blame.

The only other apps I have installed that might alter system settings to this extent are Start8 and ModernMix, both from Stardock. But neither has any reason to disable the ribbon UI of explorer.exe

Try safe mode. If it's fine, then third party apps are to blame (use msconfig to disable third party apps and services one by one or in groups).

    Otherwise
    1. Run sfc /scannow and post zipped \Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
    2. Does you installation ISO checksum match the original ISO checksum?
