Well, got a massive VM upgrade first...
I kind of figured Microsoft wasn't going to make 2012 R2 for that exact reason.

But I wonder how many servers are running 2012 as it is, because if it isn't that much then Microsoft can freely do a yearly update like that since usage isn't like 2008 or 2008 R2 for example.

The new Servers will be Server 2012 R2. And this is going to be a paid release. (you won't get it free). Unless, you have software assurance.

Microsoft is moving to a quick, once a year release schedule for these server products and they won't be free ugprades. Instead, they want you on software assurance, and want you to need software assurance to keep up on their product releases and this gives them steady recurring revenue flow.

I read about it a couple of days ago in a newsletter I got from ZDNet.

That seems like it would be awfully tedious on the management side of things with keeping servers up to date every year.

Yes, it would be tedious and we wouldn't keep up with each release. But as it stands now, with Server 2003 being so old and server 2008 being old, software assurance wasn't all that valuable to people with 5 years between releases. And Microsoft lost out on software assurance revenue because people didn't see the value. So now, they want to release new versions every year and make them paid for versions unless you have software assurance. Thus, companies see value in software assurance and Microsoft sees recurring revenue.
