Windows 8 SSD Freeze / Lockout

Hello All,
I came to this forum looking for some guidance/support on an issue that popped up over the weekend.

My setup for hard drives is a 64GB Crucial M4 SSD drive which I have Windows 8 booting from and an additional two drives (3TB Samsung for media) (1TB Samsung for programs).

I boot into Windows fine, and can run everything but after a certain amount of time (it seems very arbitrary and happens randomly) windows will slow to a crawl, lock up basically, reboot and then take me to bios screen where it doesn’t even detect my boot drive anymore. To fix this I have to press the power button the tower and turn it back on in which case it boots back into windows. Then the process of locking up will occur again.

I’ve tried automatic repair from the Windows 8 screen which didn’t result in any fix. I’m not sure how to proceed. This may be more of a SSD issue but I was unsure where to start in my search for a remedy, feel free to point me in the right direction if this is the incorrect place to post such a question or problem.

Any help and guidance is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Flawless

Hi there and welcome to Eightforums.

That is a very irritating problem you have . Have you tried updating the firmware of your SSD? Check the Crucial site for how-to's.

Another thing you could try, since you've installed your programs on a different drive, is to disable the auto-powerdown of the drive which contains the programfiles. You can disable the powersave option for that driver using the Configurationpanel, Energymanagement.

Also check if the SSD is connected to a master SATA slot on your motherboard. That is most likely slot number 1 and 3.

Please let me know if any of this works.

It could be bad memory, but I would try checking their hard drives for read element failure - Because Virtual Memory problems will cause the same symptoms. There may be an error with the filesystem, my media machine does this, and I know my Ram is good - Once a month I develop file system errors and when I fix them it all goes back to normal. There are tools to test both their hard drive and Ram on Hiren's Boot CD, link is below my sig pic.

Did you just say once a month LOL? Isn't it time you find a more permanent solution?

There was this old guy who paid really big money (thousands and thousands of dollars) to this shop to build him a super duper computer. It works great, but once a month a file becomes corrupt. He brought it back several times, and their tests kept clearing the ram. Last resort, he came to me for help knowing I used to own a business in IT. After I heard his description, I told him to insist to those clowns at that shop to replace his ram. He did and it's been a year with no problems whatsoever.

When you have a repeat of the same failure in regular intervals over and over, it's the ram. I've not seen any other cause for this type of corruption.

It's what you do when you can't afford to buy new hard drives every other day. I ALWAYS check my drives once a month anyway. It's just good preventive maintenance. And yes, if it is the same error in the same spot - But a bad drive can and will do the same thing, because Virtual memory will have the same kinds of errors. That's why I suggested to do both the Hard Drive test AND the Ram Test.
