I have started to hibernate the laptop when I'm not using it, instead of using sleep, to save battery power. When I was using sleep I had the wake timers enabled to allow the laptop to wake to run scheduled backup tasks. My understanding is that the laptop will not wake up from hibernate, but it does wake up from hibernate to perform a scheduled task. It seems that the hibernate and sleep commands put the system into the same low power state. Whether I hibernate or sleep the event in Event Viewer is the same: "Event 42, Kernel Power The system is entering sleep" Whether the laptop wakes from hibernate or sleep the event is the same "Event 1 - Power - Troubleshooter The system has returned from a low power state". However, the outward signs showing hibernate or sleep are different: in sleep the power light flashes on and off and the battery light is on, in hibernate the power and battery lights are off.
My understanding also is that when you hibernate, the state of the system is saved in the hiberfil.sys file. However, the time stamp in this file does not update with each hibernation, which only shows the time of the first bootup of the day.
The overall power plan is balanced and the settings are the same whether on battery or plugged in.
In Power Options/System Settings/Change settings that are currently unavailable/ fast startup, sleep, hibernate and lock are all enabled.
In Power Options/Change plan settings/Change advanced power settings/Sleep/ hybrid sleep is disabled and wake timers are enabled
