About a month ago this happened, again today. I have 80 gig left on my drive. All of a sudden it is down to 9 this morning. I begin cleaning, and every time I delete a bunch of junk I check and there is less drive space left. This went on for a couple of hours, ending up with about 5 gig free. I decide to reboot to see if that helps. When it comes back up I am back up to 80 gig. During the boot process I get a message indicating there is an update underway. Then for several minutes there is a message that there is cleanup of files going on.

There have been no updates suggested (Have windows update to check and let me decide what to download) and no indication that an update was underway.

From all indications MS was doing something major on my drive without permission/knowledge that was taking 75 gig of drive space.

Anyone know what they might have been doing?

^Hmmm, have not seen this. Run something like windirstat or treesizefree while it is happening and see what is growing would be my only suggestion.

I use SpaceSniffer, find lost disk space the easy way.

Doesn't need to be installed, so you can run it then delete it when done.
