    Desktop disappeared after explorer.exe error

    Good morning,

Today when I turned on my laptop the screen was black, not showing a thing. With no options to solve this I rebooted the laptop by pressing the power button for a few seconds.

When I restarted the laptop it started and shown the username/password screen. I input my password and then a pop up window appeared with an error related to explorer.exe

I cannot see the apps screen or the desktop. The desktop is just a black screen with a grey bar. I can access windows explorer by clicking "windows key + E" but I cannot do anything else.

Now everytime I start my laptop, the error does not come up, I input my password and I donīt see apps screen or desktop. Has anyone came across this issue before?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried to do that because I read it in another post, but unfortunately "windows key + X" does not work.

You said," I can access windows explorer by clicking "windows key + E" but I cannot do anything else."

In Explorer can you access the command prompt & right click the exe & choose run as administrator ?

To add run as administrator to the right click context menu read this:

Press ctrl + shift + esc

Task manager will open, then go to file> new task

type in explorer.exe and press enter explorer should start again. If it keeps happening, perform a system restore

(just press the windows key and restore to a point that you remember it didnt happen)

    Hi guys,

If I try to open any file, using the command line, an error comes up:

"The program can't start because WININET.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem".

This could be the cause of my issues. But how to fiz it?

    Try to run sfc /scannow.

When & if it gets done try running:

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    Then reboot.
DISM takes up to an hour to finish.
