My machine won't shut down properly or enter sleep mode

Hi all,

About a week ago I ran into this issue:

My machine won't fully shut down and it won't enter sleep mode without crashing. When I boot back up it gives me an error report and said that it didn't shut down properly. I tried doing a system restore to before this happened and it is still going on. I use a Crucial SSD for my OS, not sure if that could be the issue but I've used it without problems for about a year and half now.

Open Task Manager and click on the Details tab. Click on the CPU column header to sort by CPU Utilization. You should see System Idle Process at the top since it indicates the percent of time the CPU is idle or not working.

Now start a shutdown and watch the Task Manager. See if you can spot anything that might be causing the shutdown to hang. After a bit, start ending tasks. When you end the one that is causing the hang, the shutdown should complete. Now go figure out what that task belongs to and uninstall it or update it.

A good bet is your anti-virus software, though malware can also cause this kind of problem, as can hardware or a bad driver.

Both of those are viable, I've never had NOD32 cause a crash though. First thing to always check is your Disk - CHKDSK is not enough, you have to run a full disk scanner. I found one on Hiren's Boot CD called Vivax or something. Link is in my sig, just stick the disk in the drive and boot from it. Run "Dos Programs" and then "hard Disk Tools" it'll be in there. Start with the regular scans then to a remap, takes several hours but if you have a LOT of bad sectors they will all be blocked and all the data moved out.
