Frame icons

This may seem like a strange question but I can't find a reference to the subject anywhere. I just set up my new computer and am in the process of moving my files and such over to the new windows 8 operating system.

One thing I've noticed are blank bare header bars on my browser windows. No titles and no icons. Like I said, this is a strange request but in all of the tv commercials you see these nice large application icons on the top left corners of the windows. IE, FF, Favicons, etc.. I would like these.

Do I need a specific theme to turn these on? Is there a specific place in the control panel for this? Any info would be helpful.

Thank you.

Thank you for the warm welcome and patience with an 8 newbie. First off, possibly I am misunderstanding you or possibly I have not been clear. In either case, I apologize. For now I'll just be working in desktop mode. The whole metro screen thing frustrates me and when I do get into something I can't seem to get back without hitting the escape key. I know its a matter of learning it all and getting used to the new interface so for now I'll stick to what I know.

I know the aero transparency is gone (sadly) but has IE10 done away with the headers completely or is turning these on a setting in windows 8.

what I want frame-icons.jpg

what I have empty-headers.jpg

As you can the window frames have 'nothing" on them. No icons of any sort and not even page titles.

Am I stuck with this or should I go back to IE 9.

Thanks again.

Ways to close a Metro app
  1. Alt+F4
  2. Grab very top edge with mouse and drag to very bottom of screen before releasing left mouse button

There's also a few ways of returning to the Start screen

  1. Press Winkey on keyboard
  2. Move mouse to lower left corner and click the Start icon when it appears
  3. I have this :orb:"Start" Screen Shortcut - Create in Windows 8 pinned to my taskbar and it takes me to start screen with a few regular program tiles.
  4. I also have :winkey: "All Apps" Shortcut - Create in Windows 8 for going to All apps. If you prefer smaller tiles with less scrolling (alphabetical order is only option).
Type one or two letters for programs I don't use often.

Which is much faster than going to desktop and right clicking to bring out All apps icon in lower right corner or right clicking in upper right corner for search box.

We have a great Tutorial section Windows 8 - Tutorial Index

Creating these 3 toolbars also keeps one from leaving the desktop so often. Credit to Brink.

  1. Right click your taskbar, point to Toolbars then select New toolbar...
  2. Copy/Paste one of the lines below in the Folder box
  3. Click on Select Folder

%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Windows Accessories

Here's a few Context Menu items from 2 pages of them

Power - Add Cascading Desktop Context Menu in Windows 8

"Pin to Start" Files in Windows 8

Sign out - Add to Desktop Context Menu in Windows 8

Restart - Add to Desktop Context Menu in Windows 8

Shut Down Shortcut - Create in Windows 8
