    c: Free space-- WRONG!

I'm trying to shrink C: before partitioning it. It will only allow 85 GB for a new one even though 715 GB is free out of 776 GB on c. I error checked, optimized, and defragged but no change.

You are trying to make the partition smaller, but the only choice you have is 85 Gig? Are you using Disk Manager to do it?

Try using Partition Wizard Home Edition, its a 2 second download and 1 second install, see if you can resize it to your liking that way.

Are you sure your drive is not somehow already compressed? If so, shut that off - Also, From within Partition Wizard you will be able to tell if your Drive Partition is Logical or Primary - If it is Logical, you will have to convert it to Primary - And you cant use partition Wizard Home current edition to change that - There is a guy who posted an earlier version that does. I'll try to find the link

Current version will do primary >logical.

It won't convert dynamic drives- that is what the earlier version is for.

You can try to temporarily disable pagefile.sys & hiberfil.sys, reboot then shrink again. The reason is sometimes Windows creates these 2 files near the end of the disk and disk management will have problem calculating the continuous free space to shrink.

    It works

Thanks everybody. Amazing to get help on Mother's day like this. Partition Wizard Home Edition did it. I did a checkdisk 1st with PW. MS still didn't work but Partition Wizard Home Edition did. I'm going to see if they have a tip jar.

    Thanks again

So, you just did a partition check with PW? It's the same as CHKDSK, but it is run differently, so that it actually LOOKS for errors and fixes em.

When you do a Scan disk in Win 8, it does just a menial remedial check, if it finds something wrong, THEN it schedules an Automatic Repair for the next boot cycle. If so be prepared to wait 2 hours if it decides to do a full disk scan.

Not so with PW - PW unmounts the drive and makes the changes immediately. So if it finds errors on the Main Drive, it forces a reboot and it is fixed by the app during reboot, and this way it is a lot faster than Windows 8's Auto Repair.
