    Location Services Not Working

No Apps can find my Location. (their not finding an incorrect location, but not finding ANY location info). I have Windows Location Platform enabled in Control Panel. I have Let Apps Use My Location turned on in User Settings. All apps have Location turned on..but. NONE OF THEM can find location.

One App will give me this error "Location Service Error: Either using the current location is blocked, or network is down".

Is it possible I inadvertently disabled an essential startup program or service? I don't even know which ones to look for. HELP!

    TIA! :-)

Hm, one thing.... Do you have a GPS chip on your motherboard or tablet or notebook or whatever you have? I think Location Services require this. I'll get back you you after I try a couple of things.

Ok, I just checked two mapping programs, both show my location as being from where my Network Node originaltes from. It is not showing my exact location, naturally, because I don't have any kind of GPS in my system.

If Location Services cannot find a GPS in the system, then it does the next thing it can do - It will locate you by where your ISP is serving you from. Think of it as the same thing in an iPhone, you have location services, but there is this tiny GPS locator which is on the same ribbon as the back camera and the top switch.

Ya kind of hafta have the hardware in your system for it to find you. If you DO have a tablet that has this in, then something is blocking it from working. But the first thing to check is to make sure you have a GPS chip somewhere.

But this bugs me that it is not showing your NETWORK location.

I didn't see a service for Location Services - Check your WWAN and WLAN autoconfig services make sure they are both running. I can't find any other settings for it, either in Services or Control Panel. And you say it's ON everywhere you can turn it on? Make sure you also have it ON from within the programs you are trying to use.

Thanks VERY MUCH XweAponX for both your detailed reply and your test. Yes, all settings are enabled, as well as the App. It is just a desktop, so no GPS chip. But, up until a few days ago, it WAS giving network location. All the Network Config Services are started If you (or nyone else) have any more ideas, they will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. it's not a network/router problem, as I tried by connecting to a completely different network; still nothing.

Open Services.Msc and look for Network Location Awareness - See if it is not running, if it is not, start it.

Thanks again! Great suggestion, but in my case, it was already running. However, I DID solve the problem, and put the solution below to help others in the future. It is a great little Troubleshooter/Fixer from Microsoft (who knew!) that can fix this as well as many other issues. It plays with Windows 8, and it seems to "do no harm". It's especially good to find/fix "elusive" problems that can creep on those of us (like me) who fiddle/tune/adjust and sometimes run into trouble. Here it is:

Ahhh - I hadn't thought that the problem was on the Metro side. Sorry about that - It seems like Metro runs in a whole different envoronment than Desktop. I'm glad you found that. That fix is also part of Yamicsoft's Windows 8 Manager.
