The original poster may have to settle for an app to view the psd thumbnails.
Irfanview & Irfanview Thumbnails support .psd files for viewing.
    I just tested it.

If all the .psd files are in one location, it would be easy to view them.
Irfanview Thumbnails is vastly easier to use than GIMP.

    I think I solved it.

You want to see thumbnails in File Explorer of the .psd images ?

    Solution

    Install Pictus.
Drag & drop multiple .psd images into it.
Right click & choose Show in Explorer.

    Find zipped Pictus attached.

If you have photoshop installed, it should show PSD thumbnails. But you have to TELL it to.

Find a PSD file, right click on it, and hit "Generate Thumbnails" - THIS is Photoshop 7, it adds a property sheet to PSD files:

I think Photoshop 7 was the last version to have that option in the dialogue box and it was removed from CS onwards.

Actually, I think I may have been unclear. What I meant to say is that with Photoshop open, when I go to File>Open using XP or 7, my folder displayed thumbnails in the Look In> window. I'd select the folder (eg: Bolt-Neck Guitars) and I could see all of the images whether small, medium or large was selected, jpeg or psd. With Windows 8, having selected "All Types" I see only the jpegs as thumbnails. The Photoshop files have only the PS icon. The trouble with that is I often have several versions of a file or revisions, and if want to go back to an earlier one, I have to open each file individually to see if it's the right one. I can't Save As a different format because those files are in Layers.

I mainly design guitars, and I have lots of parts files that I build with. Fretboards with dots; with diamonds; with abalone; mother of pearl; in ebony; rosewood; maple; bridges in chrome, black, gold, those in 6-string, 7-string, 8-string, etc. Literally hundreds of parts, and reading through the file names is time consuming. Being able to open a folder and seeing them all as thumbnails lets me breeze through the small stuff and work on the design much more quickly. This problem just stalls me at every turn.
