Just bought a computer with Windows 8...its...interesting?

My wife and I needed a new computer because our Toshiba Satellite laptop was just too old to be of service anymore. We had a choice between a Mac laptop or a computer with Windows 8. After browsing around we settled on the Sony Vaio SVJ20215CXB. Two reasons: 1) we both do a lot of work with MS Word and PowerPoint and 2) we both have iphones and a ipad and wanted something different because Apple seems to have gotten stale.

After a week of playing with Windows 8 we have some questions that hopefully some fellow W8'ers can assist us or at least give us some tips.

First, what we like about windows 8:
    1. Programs run very fast
    2. Its a very fast startup
    3. Live tiles (on the apps that have them) are a plus
    4. The Metro screen is like your cluttered desktop from XP but only simplified and exciting
    5. The integration between SkyDrive and W8 is great. Very easy to work on a document at work, upload to SkyDrive and work on it at Home and then re-upload it from home so its at your work the next morning. I find Dropbox too buggy and haven't had any annoying issues with Skydrive.

However, here are some problems we have:
    1. How do we make the apps split the screen so that we can multitask? (like work on a word doc and check email at the same time?)

    2. The integration between the old desktop and the metro is bad. (for example in W8 there are a few pc settings but have to go back to the old desktop to find the rest of the settings. Likewise with documents, if you want a folder to store documents you have to save them on the old desktop). Why not do away with the old desk top? MS really needs to pick one format and stick with it.

    3. When viewing photos in W8, they take up the entire screen. How do we make them smaller? Our screen is 20 inches and we don't need to view photos on the entire screen.

    4. How do we make the address bar in IE10 always appear? I don't like the constant swiping up inorder to make it appear and likewise swiping down to make my tabs appear. Its very touch-unfriendly.

    5. Why is there no permanent clock? Again, we have to swipe up for it to appear? That's silly and gets old.

    6. I was downstairs one morning and I heard my computer notification go off. When I got back to the computer there was no notification. Why isn't there a notification page that shows you what you missed? You would have thought that would be a must? If I were a app developer why would I make a app with notifications if you cant store them?

    7. The Windows app store is bad. First, they say they have 50,000 apps but where are they? When we select a app store category we see some but theres no way there are 50,000 viewable. Are we missing a feature that shows us more? Also, the icons/layout within the app store category's are amateurish at best. Very ugly. Like something a highschool student created in photoshop.

    8. If we have a word document, and its on the old desktop, how do we make it a tile on metro?

    9. My final complaint is that Microsoft did not release a tutorial video when we first turned on Windows 8. Its as if MS just expected us to know how to operate and use windows 8?. If me and my wife were struggling with it then how is your everyday user going to react??

Overall, it looks like we are using a beta version and doesn't seem to fit the quality of MS products.

Would love to read anyone else's opinions/tips.

    thanks

Hi Brking and welcome to Eightforums.

You've certainly made an effort to describe your question very well. I appreciate that! Let me see if I can help you out with your questions.

I second that!!! It is indeed a great OS!

    1. How do we make the apps split the screen so that we can multitask? (like work on a word doc and check email at the same time?)
Right now this is not yet possible. You can move one app to the right or left corner so that you have two open apps with a 20% vs 80% split. But.... this summer the Windows 8.1 (aka Blue) update is coming. And this update will give you the possibility to put 2 or even 4 apps in a splitscreen setup.
So just be patient for a few more months.

Some folks like the "desktop modus" and some folks want to do everything in Metro modus. I guess you have to get used to this. Although the Blue update will provide a Windows Explorer Metro stype app.

    3. When viewing photos in W8, they take up the entire screen. How do we make them smaller? Our screen is 20 inches and we don't need to view photos on the entire screen.
You can wait for the Blue update or you can use Windows Picture Viewer which will start in the Desktop environment. There you can make the screen as small as you like.

    4. How do we make the address bar in IE10 always appear? I don't like the constant swiping up inorder to make it appear and likewise swiping down to make my tabs appear. Its very touch-unfriendly.
Don't know if that is possible with the IE10 Metro App. The IE10 Desktop version has the option to show the addressbar all the time.

    5. Why is there no permanent clock? Again, we have to swipe up for it to appear? That's silly and gets old.
Yes....you are so true there. Perhaps Blue will bring back the clock in Start. Another option is to use the program Decor8 - Personalize the Windows® 8 Start screen with Decor8™!. That will show a clock in Start and give you the options to change your Start significantly. I really love this program!

    6. I was downstairs one morning and I heard my computer notification go off. When I got back to the computer there was no notification. Why isn't there a notification page that shows you what you missed? You would have thought that would be a must? If I were a app developer why would I make a app with notifications if you cant store them?
Yup....you are so right! There is not yet a possibility to see the notifications that you've missed. Perhaps Blue will make this happen?

The appstore is by default locallized. So it will only show the apps in your native language. You have to change the settings so that is will show all the apps. In the store app go to the charms bar and then settings. The tab preferences. Select both questions with NO.
Search the appstore for a * (asterix) to see all the apps there are.

    8. My final complaint is that Microsoft did not release a tutorial video when we first turned on Windows 8. Its as if MS just expected us to know how to operate and use windows 8?. If me and my wife were struggling with it then how is your everyday user going to react??
At www.microsoft.com you can find lots of instruction video's! Enjoy watching them.

Ok... I hope I have been helpfull for you. At least it is a long text to read .

    Good luck.

... try this one also. Apps can be snapped on the desktop or minimized to thumbnails.
The control keys are Win + Tab (hold Winkey and tab, tab, tab)
Also task switching is Alt + Tab (hold Alt key and tab, tab, tab)

Will you sell me your Toshiba Satellite? No, heh, well, welcome to Windows 8, it runs the desktop pretty much the same as Windows 7 - Only about 12 times faster, but if you have problems you have to always allow the Automatic Repair tool to run fully, there is no cheating like we had in XP or 7 where we could cancel a schedules disk scan, if you restart in the middle of an automatic repair procedure, it could hose your system good. Hopefully you'll be OK but if you have any trouble that's what these forums are for.

I am a little weary of installing apps from third parties that aren't in the app store and have been ok'd by MS. Or should I not be concerned?

In the w8 settings there is a notification button that says 1 hour, 6 hours, etc. What does it do?

yes but it doesn't stay. It's just a shortcut instead of a fix. Thanks though.

Decor8 isn't an 'App' from the Store. It's basically a GUI modification for the new start menu made by Stardock software which has a noteworthy history of creating windows aesthetic modifications; and you should have no fear of purchasing or using any of their products.

Decor8 makes the start menu look pretty sharp and more eye-pleasing depending on your preference.

A lot of store bought machines contain Stardock mods, like "fences" and such. If yours came with Decor8 that may have been an addon bought by the maker and given to you gratis to try out if it is trial or to keep if it is full. I used to run "Fences" in Windows 7 until I discovered it was slowing my system down by an enormous factor. It's the same reason why all HPs contain just about every "Wild Tangent" "game" in the world - You can either keep these things or remove them. When I buy a new machine I prefer it to have nothing on it but the OS and the drivers it needs, I do most of my own mods and I have my own programs I don't need trial this or trial that.

Does anyone know how to make a document a tile on the Metro start menu?

Also, there is a option in the settings side bar for Notifications (1 hour, 3 hours, etc..). Anyone know where these notifications are?

    thanks
