How to Dual Boot with Win 8 and Vista

    Greetings! New member.

Hear is the situation. My Old laptop died. Not a Harddrive issue it functions fine. I had Vista installed. I now have a new HP ENVY DV7. I would like to set up my new system to allow booting from either my old hard drive, or my new system. Any thoughts on how to accomplish this?

    Thanks,
    Brad

I would keep both systems running. If the old one could run Vista finely... it would run Eight or Seven much better ! But if you really want to dual-boot from different disks, simply press F8 (or whatever) to choose boot media (BIOS config may be required).

Keeping each system is not viable. First Laptop does not function.

So IF I get the second harddrive connected, I should be able to detect the other operating system?

    Not clear what you mean.

Are you trying to move the HD containing Vista to a totally new machine?

    Couple of considerations:

    1. Vista is unlikely to boot on new hardware.

Easily fixed with Paragon p2p adjust ( also called adaptive restore. One click and it is fixed ).

    2. Do you have a Vista license which will work on the new machine?

It would need to be a Vista retail license ( not oem ).

you would need to reinstall Vista to work on the new laptop,it will not likely boot to the old vista ,device and driver issues will cause it to not function .and most laptops don't have 2 harddrive bays

I expect your machine comes with secure boot/efi.

That makes it tricky to use another os.

Paragon would be able to image your vista install across and adjust accordingly, but it won't work with secure boot enabled.

If you fancy another os on there ( and who wouldn't ) , you could use a free linux distro.

opensuse x64, or ubuntu 13.04 x64 should install fine - better than windows 8, of course.

You won't need the large dvd - the LIve KDE x64 will be fine software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 12.3

I have a Vista and Win 7 dual boot desktop. I want to replace Vista with 8. Is it just a case of booting into Vista and running the 8 install DVD as I did when I upgraded to 8 on my Win 7 laptop? What chance is there of the process screwing up booting into 7 Do you recommend any precautions?
