Start Screen has shrunk

Hello folks, I seem to have a problem and I don't quite know how to fix it. You see after I play a game, no matter what game it is when I quit it my start screen looks like this.

As you can see I'm in quite a pickle, I want to start editing my start screen but I can't and it has nothing to do with the Start Screen wallpaper change because it was doing this before I even used the start screen customizer.

That's better.

Can you make it smaller, say about a third of the size it is now?

Hello TaylorSwift. Welcome to EightForums.

One option would be to (if not already done),
go to the desktop, and check your screen resolution and refresh rates.

Win + X > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Adjust screen resolution.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5572-screen-resolution-set-displays-windows-8-a.html

Also, you could sign out (log off), then go back in.

No I have no say in what size it is and it is bugging the living daylights out of me.

I think he was making a ;)

Let us know how you are doing.

What does your start screen look like after booting before any games?

Are you referring to a metro game or a desktop game?
Can you name one, so that we could help you find the problem.
You said all, ("no matter what game") when you return from any game, the start screen shrinks?
Is it restored after turning on your computer in the morning?

Could you post a screenshot of the problem without the start screen customizer?
Does it help to sign out then back in? Is your start screen always shrunken?
Has your start screen ever worked? There are no tiles pinned yet.
You say "I want to start editing my start screen."
Did you unpin all the tiles from your start screen?

Sorry for the delay, I was referring to a desktop game. When I first boot up the computer everything is fine it is only when I quit ANY game that the resolution on the metro screen shrinks. The games I mainly play are San Andreas, Victoria II and Football Manager.

I don't have any pinned tiles because I'm looking around for 256 x 256 icons for all the programs and yes my start screen works.

Does the same effect occur if tiles are pinned? Let's say, pin your desktop tile, and other metro apps or anything else like the file explorer, my computer, control panel or task manager. Does everything shrink?

Do your pinned tiles shrink?
Can you post a screenshot of tiles on the shrunken start screen?

I just went through the process of installing steam, and Football Manager demo.
(quite a complicated game  )

Seems to be working ok... will continue to investigate. Perhaps a regular gamer will help as well.
Do you have this?

Do you have the latest version of steam installed? Does your desktop steam control panel look like this?

Yes I have the latest steam installed and my steam looks like that.

Try going into a game and then quitting the game.

I did. On the exit menu, it says quit to start screen (not metro start screen) or quit game and exit (to desktop control panel) ... both do not affect the metro start screen. Only 1 game installed so far.
Did the steam manager ever work properly? (not affect the metro start screen)

This could help.
Download and Install DirectX9 End User Runtime | Install DirectX, DX9 from Official Microsoft Download Center

Could you post a screenshot of the start screen with a few tiles pinned and the start screen customizer disabled or uninstalled to try and replicate the issue with the default settings with a few pinned tiles?

it has nothing to do with the Start Screen wallpaper changer because it was doing this before I even used the start screen customizer.

I know. Perhaps, you could try Decor8, and see if the problem persists.

If you are using a tablet, you might want a full size start screen, if you are using a desktop, clearly a full size start screen is awful.

In Ubuntu you can resize the Dash (MS call it the start screen ) to be right for the device you are using.

MS have chosen to force it full screen on everyone.

... thanks for that screenshot ...
Wow, that is quite unique. ok. Well, ... a few more suggestions.
I have seen some odd behavior on the start screen using the Windows Start Screen Customizer by Deviantart. (still in beta)

I would test drive Decor8 to see if that helps.
Otherwise, it might be necessary to try and figure out when the problem first occurred.
Here are 3 other options.
