How do you use the snipping tool in Metro?

I am using a browser that starts up automatically in Metro. When I want to get a copy of the screen I end up going back to the Metro screen to start up the snipping tool and it opens in the Desktop, but I need it in the Metro area to get a copy of my screen in the browser. I have had to resort to the old fashioned way of getting a print screen and pasting it into Paint then saving it.
Any hints on this?

Welcome to EightForums, phxheat13.

Good question. Yes, the snipping tool is a Win32 desktop program, so I believe it won't work on the Modern/Metro side. There may be an app in the Store. I'm on my 7 side currently, but when I'm in 8 I'll check it out.

You can use WinKey/PrintScreen combo that will take a screenshot and place it in a folder named the same for you to edit in an editing program or app.

Yes, It will work on anything.

Run snipping tool first and make sure it's not in Capture mode by pressing <ESC> Key then go to metro screen/Pop Up Menu or whatever you want to capture, hold down <CTRL> key and press PrintScreen, the screen becomes greyed out (capture mode), just click and drag to capture. Press <ESC> if you want to cancel or start over again.

So the key is: CTRL+PrintScreen to enter capture mode (Screen greyed out) and ESC to get out of capture mode

Hope this helps !!!

Note   Note
The above post from Topgundcp makes my post below unnecessary. As I am so used to this third party tool I am telling about I notice now I have not searched enough for how to do it with Snipping Tool. Anyway, as the FS Capture has and can so much more than the Snipping Tool, I leave my post here.

Hi Phxheat13, welcome to the Eight Forums.

I have searched an answer for this, found nothing. I use a third party solution Fast Stone Capture for this. It costs about $20 but up to version 5.3 it was and is free.

FS Capture official site: FastStone Screen Capture - The Best Screen Capture Software
Free FS Capture v. 5.3: Old Version of FastStone Capture 5.3 Download - OldApps.com

Even with FS Capture there's an undocumented trick to get screenshots from Start Screen or Windows App screen, I found it out accidentally:
When on Start Screen or on a Windows App, click the appropriate keyboard shortcut to launch FS Capture
Now bring pointer to the upper left corner where you normally would get the list of open but suspended apps and click the mouse button:

2013-04-26_023952.png

If you selected Capture Rectangle Region (keyboard shortcut CTRL + PRINT SCR) you will now see the FS Capture crosshair and can capture selected rectangle region:

2013-04-26_024216.png

If you selected Capture Window (keyboard shortcut ALT + PRINT SCR) you will now see the red window selection borders surrounding your Start Screen or Windows App screen. Pressing the mouse button now captures the Start Screen or App window and brings you to editor where you can modify and save your screenshot:

2013-04-26_024500.png

Easy and fast. If you go for the free version 5.3, it need to be run in compatibility mode otherwise the editor will not be able to save your modifications. Set compatibility to Windows XP:

Hopefully this helps you at least a bit.

You are welcome. We all learn new things everyday so you're not alone.

@Kari,
Even though Snipping Tool can do most of the basic captures such as Windows, Fullscreen, Freehand, popup/dropdown menu. However, Same as you, I don't use it but I use Snagit instead because it got tons more features.

Snagit or Jing are excellent options. And then there is always the god old Prt Scrn.

I hant found a direct way to use snagit, for partial (rectangle) captures? But, you may know, if SnagIt is running, and you "prnt screen", whilst using a metro app, and then hit the Windows key, you are returned to the snagit editor, on the desktop, where you can complete the cut out.

Just set Capture Type to All-In-One

Hi there
You can do it the OLD fashioned way FOR FREE / NO 3rd party stuff required if you have say Ms Word / Wordpad on your system. Wordpad is there in Windows by default.

1) in the Metro app hit Prt screen which will save to clipboard.
2) Now start Ms Word / Wordpad (this will start in Desktop mode), If you don't have Word - WORDPAD works just fine too (installed by default)
3) Hit CTRL V (or paste) Your screen image will appear in Ms Word / Wordpad
4) Re-size in Ms word / wordpad at will
5) Now use the Snipping tool as you would on the desktop - select the bit you want and save say as .png

The advantage of doing this is that things like popup screens / menus etc are captured as well . Normally when using the snipping tool a popup screen, right mouse click menu etc disappear.

FREE simple easy.

Sample screenshot enc from the Metro Financial application. Part of the screen selected using method shown and Wordpad.

Cheers
jimbo

Not true at all !!! snipping tool can do all.

  1. Run Snipping tool, select Capture type (Full screen, Windows, Region, Freehand), Press ESC if screen greyed out
  2. Display the captured target (Context menu in the screen shot example)
  3. CTRL+PrintScreen (Screen greyed out => Capture Mode), then Capture

Ah. Topgun.
I think I have an older version than you (9.1)

9.1.PNG

The options in SnagIt are great, far in excess of the snipping tool or prntscreen, but, in answer to Jimbo, neither have any distinct advantage over a simple prtscreen to paint, or whatever, and edit. One thing that can be done, though, is very easy adding of notes or pointers, with the help of the auto snagit editor window.

I've been using Printkey2000 for the past 7 years. Ypu can also set it to run in the background automatically on startup. So everytime you need to capture the entire screen, by window or by object, you just hit prntscrn key and an option window (see photo) will popup. You can print it out directly (on paper or pdf) or save in any format you want.

Spartan Lite Clipboard (500 cells & 2 macros for archiving) & Spartan Clipboard (10460 cells & 140 macros) work great also.

Spartan Lite Clipboard can also save the last 25 deleted clips & 25 Windows clipboard history (when you turn Spartan Lite Capturing off and may still need a clip or more for multi-pasting later)
Spartan Clipboard
can also save the last 523 deleted clips & 523 Windows clipboard history (when you turn Spartan Capturing off and may still need a clip or more for multi-pasting later)
They are not a screen capturing program but pressing Print Scrn captures full image. Pressing Alt+Print Scrn captures active window.
Right click+copy saves a picture. Highlighting text, right click+copy saves text.

After 25 saves you need to clear yellow cells by deleting or saving to an open white cell.
If you have many graphic images on a page you can view all at once by clicking the Pictures tab & Browse Picture Clips on this Sheet.
When you edit an image in your clipboard, you have option to also save a copy somewhere else on your computer.

The biggest advantage to this not being a screen capturing program is its editor. It has all kinds of fancy tricks like FastStone Capture
BUT, as long as you leave your original on the clipboard you will always be able to re-edit the image. Even after you save the changes.
Text boxes stay alive so will be able move them, change their contents etc.

It has Bulk Paste, Bulk Paste to Cells Across & Bulk Paste to Cells Down.

Standard Hard Disk Edition Runs on all versions of Windows from 98 to Windows 8

Portable Edition for USB Drives Runs from any USB drive (USB drive menu available here)

U3 Edition for U3 Drives Runs from U3 Smart Drives

The Microsoft Office (And most other) multi clipboards simply retain the last few clips so that you can copy more than once before pasting. That functionality doesn't even scratch the surface of what Spartan can do!
You can save clips permanently. You can take (and edit ) screen shots. You can create clips which automatically include the system date and time. You can encrypt sensitive clips like your passwords and credit card details. You can paste any digital photo or graphic file on your PC simply by browsing to it and clicking a button - and you have the option to paste it in the format accepted by Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail which other clipboards do not offer.
As well as a multi clipboard, you get a year planner, a graphics editor and a picture browser thrown in. Clips which are Web addresses work as bookmarks. Clips which are phone numbers will dial via your modem. Clips which are files on your PC work as shortcuts to them. It will remove email indentation chevrons from text. It will word wrap fixed line length text (Including the repair of hyphenated words) It even pastes text into old DOS programs! The list of uses for this software just goes on and on.
Have you ever needed information on one computer that you know you have on another?
Forget transferring files. Spartan portable editions run entirely from plug in flash drives.
Plug into one PC and copy. Plug into another and paste.
It's that easy!
