Substantial Lag Occuring Out of Nowhere

Hi, I have Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. My computer was running fine until about 1 hour ago; now there is more lag. Substantial slowness when it boots up, small lag between my typing and what's seen on screen, lag opening and closing programs, etc. I can no longer use Dragon NatuallySpeaking because the computer is too slow.

This is not due to bloatware or too many apps--It happened suddenly (computer started slowing down right away). I have not installed any new programs. I have tried both shutting down and restarting my computer.

    What could be causing this?

    Thanks for any help

Here is a screenclip of my computer performance:

It baffles me what is causing this. My hard drive has more than 100 GB free so I doubt it's that.

Does the App History (next tab along from your screenshot) in Task Manager tell you anything? Make sure you've selected "Show History for all processes" in Options, and try sorting it by clicking on the column headings, to see which software is using most CPU over time.

Hi, all apps except Weather show 0 (weather shows 0.2) I don't use apps, I'm on a desktop FYI. Is there anything else it could be?

Ok, I attempted to use my last restore point, which failed, but the computer is fast again. Whatever works I guess
