hello
im running a server in win 2012
which iv been told is the same as win 8

something got screwed up and when ever id right click on a folder win explorer would crash
so I went hunting online and found instructions to remove context menu entries from the shell in 2 dif places
I did that and got my right click menu back
was vary pleased with myself hehehe

then the next day I wanted to edit the access settings on a users folder
and when I brot up the folder properties there was/is no security tab
clearly my registry is messed up

is there anyway to fix the registry without doing a full re install
better yet without even doing a reboot ?

Try running:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

in administrator command prompt.

It works on win 8.
It might work on yours.
Or not.

It won't hurt to try it.
It takes a LONG time to finish.
It goes online to Microsoft & gets things to fix problems. :)

If it works, restart to configure anything it got from Microsoft.

Post back the outcome for our perusal.

I don't know.
I Googled it & found nothing about size.

I have a 500 GB drive.

Try this one:

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

It is suppose to work on a server.

EDIT-- Like I said,it might not work on your machine.:(

I saw your screen shot.

That is wrong.
See this picture:

Untitled.png

To get the Administrator Command Prompt, put your cursor in the far left bottom corner of the screen & Right Click.
Then Left Click on the Command Prompt (Admin).

Untitled 2.png

When it opens try the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command again.

The same goes for sfc /scannow.

Post back with results.

DISM and SFC are not going to clean up registry problems.

Do you have any System Restore points? If so, pick one before you made any changes to the registry.

Since you run a server, you should be doing regular image backups to make recovery from these kinds of problems real easy.

I don't have a restore point
I kinda have a habit of doing a full re install when I have problems
but this seems like such a simple little thing
hardly worth the bother

is there no simple way to just fix the reg

The previous poster indicated the commands would not fix registry errors.

Here is a tutorial on opening the elevated command prompt.

The easiest method is to press the Windows key plus the letter X & choose it from the list.

It still wouldn't hurt to run them.

In your next screen shot include the entire prompt window, not just the bottom of it.

The title bar should say Administrator Command Prompt.
Like in the tutorial link.

One final try:
In elevated command prompt, type or paste in:

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer /v Nosecuritytab /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Hit enter.
If it doesn't help The attached reg file is all I can come up with.Save it & right click it & choose Merge.

View attachment Security Tab.reg

I'm out of ideas. :(

A refresh install is a pain, but may be needed.
A full reinstall would be the last resort.

Hi there
Might be too late this time but a SERVER should be backed up just like any other computer -- if you have an image backup just restore it --and if you don't well start taking daily image backups. Even on a server separate the OS from any other data / partitions. The W2012 server itself shouldn't need a huge partition -- 40 GB should probably be more than enough especially if you aren't going to store many (if any) applications on it like say Ms OFFICE.

Most of the Free backup programs will detect you are running a server and will try and scam you into PAYING for the Server edition. However if you get the separate BOOTABLE backup and restore programs these will always work - even for a SERVER as these are usually LINUX based and the Windows disks / partitions are simply just DATA as far as the program is concerned.

(Download the Free copy on a Non server OS and simply create the Bootable media).

Cheers
jimbo

worked good in 2008
but it don't want to work for me
