Solved ASUS Freezing Problem

I recently bought a new ASUS K55N-DS81 laptop and its been working fine since I got it but today (April 21st, 2013) while browsing in firefox the computer froze completely, it was restarted by pressing the button and afterwards only the ASUS splash page would load with the circle loading animation, it would never progress anywhere just constantly spin. It turned on once and asked me to go back to a previous restore point, during which it froze, now it powered on once again and it updated some things while booting, I got the event log from the event viewer so could someone please help me check to see what caused this behavior in the computer. Thanks!

This just started happening to me today, but with an HP using an Proprietary ASUS "M2N" Motherboard, I'll check your errors see if the same thing is happening, I was getting some kind of RAID failure and it was causing the same circle thing, taking large amounts of time to progress through the boot.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
You've got some kind of major Address conflict, windows update is stalling and a printer driver is refusing to install/start. Some updates failed to load right, and Windows is trying to self correct it but can't because of the DHCP address conflict. And under it all, you were running Mcafee, and that is causing even more problems. So you've got processes trying to load but can't, the whole WinLogon is failing to start withing the amount of time allotted for it.

I'd stick your Install Disk in, boot from that, and try to do a System Restore from there- Go back before April 12th

You may also want to do a GWscan on your Hard Drive to make sure there are no bad spots, read element failures on it. This does not necessarily mean the drive is bad, but It may have trouble reading and that could be causing the failures. Try to find Hiren's Boot Disk, it's got everything you need to troubleshoot that. Use GWscan and scan the entire drive, then boot to MiniXP and do a CHKDSK from within THAT.

Ah- See, I was having all kinds of errors, similar to yours. At any time, did your system just hang up or give you the Windows 8 version of the BSOD? Even if it just hung up for apparently no reason, there is always a reason. If it hung and you tried to reboot, it probably did not start the automatic repair like it was supposed to, and so it skipped doing a mandatory CHKDSK. If this happens, it makes your system highly unstable- You have to run the CHKDSK and possibly a full media scan from outside of Windows 8, which is why I am a total proponent of Hiren's Boot Disks:

Hiren's BootCD 15.2 - All in one Bootable CD » www.hiren.info

These are a MUST for anyone using any new OS made by MS. The Windows 8 Auto Repair and Diag is pretty sophisticated but it cannot do all of the checks required for certain crash scenarios.

I'd seriously, do it like this, get the Hiren's Boot Disk, use the Dos Tools/Hard Disk Tools/GWscan to check for read element failure fix it with the full media scan IF it's giving you read error, then boot to Mini XP and run the CHKDSK which they have automated for you, just click the link provided in the Start Menu and check your drive, which may not be mounted as C so you have to check with Explorer.

Because I've been having the rotating circle thing all evening, I just scanned all of the drives on my system, took about 4 hours, but Hiren's found all kinds of errors on them - After I fixed em, my Windows 8 booted right up, perfect- Because if Windows 8 does not boot up within 45 seconds from a cold boot - SOMETHING is very wrong. You should be totally ready to go from cold boot after one minute.

I've been fighting this all night. If any of that does not work, you can always try the "Windows 8 Refresh" - that is, if you have all of the backup disks for your desktop programs. Refresh only saves Metro apps. When you scan your drive(s) make sure you use the command line "scandisk c: /r" to scan the whole surface of the partition, on all drives connected, else System Restore will just keep kicking you out until you do. Windows 8 System Restore is finicky it will not progress unless your drives are 100% perfect. And I am sure with the amount of un-clean restarts in that error file, your drive probably has developed some bad spots.

Thank you so much for all the help. I am currently still downloading Hiren's BootCD (slow itnernet connection), I will let you know of the results once I try it out. Thanks!

There can be all kinds of reasons why this is happening, but with the amount of failures Im seeing in your event log, going all the way back to last summer, to December of last year, either it is a corrupt install or a bad disk. In either case, you need to so an In Place Install if you can get to your Desktop.

December of last year? I bought this laptop a couple of weeks ago, brand new.

Edit. Also I finally got the computer to boot, installed the updates and everything, so far it has been working fine for the entire day, but I'm still going to scan using the CD you linked, once i figure out how that stupid ASUS bios works anyways.

Yes, there were errors gong back to last summer. Wait, I'll open it again. Ok here, the earliest error is from August, 2012 - These are all serious driver errors, and they are still there, in April.

If you got in then it probably was able to install the drivers that were pending. You can do a full scandisk using the install disk, or from F8/Advanced Options get in to Troubleshooting, and run the Command Prompt, you will have to run CHKDSK /c: /x /r that will dismount the drive, scan it and fix any problems it finds.

That's strange considering I just bought it brand new, sealed and everything. Why do you think it lists stuff from those dates? I haven't had a chance to even turn on that laptop today but hopefully I'll be able to tonight.

Sealed? It may have been a return. Did you buy it from Frys by any chance>? 90 percent of all Frys stock is returned products. You can tell by the Huge White Label on it. The reseal it too. They don't care if it was bad, they'll just pack it back up and sell it again. this is why I never ever buy anything from them ever, its newegg for me, tigerdirect, or I go to a local place.

I got it from TigerDirect. According to the event viewer 8/1 is when windows\logs was created so maybe install date? I'm running CHKDSK right now, and I still couldn't get it to boot from the CD, its ESC key for this laptop supposedly yet only boot options are bios or the HDD. Probably have to make some changes to the bios. Thanks for all the help, I appreciate it.

EDIT. DHCP error is just my stupid access point.

Well, now this is wholly odd then, maybe those dates reflect when the machine was made, but there should have been NO errors. I'd send it back, print up that error log, ask for a new machine. That's just too bizarre, I have an eTower here with Vista on it, and the event logs go all the way to the beginning, there are no errors in there at all, reflecting that DHCP error.

At any point, did you have the date set up wrong? That may explain those backdated errors. You have to set the boot sequence in the BIOS, set it up so it boots from Optical Disk FIRST. It should be F2 or something to get into the BIOS, or, it will say on the splash screen.

The errors seem to be from them being unable to access the windows update service, and the printer driver errors I was having was because I was trying to install a printer driver, which wasn't working because it was missing an update from the windows update service. I was finally able to boot from the CD and checked the hard drive, there were no errors. I have been monitoring the event viewer since yesterday and the only warnings I'm getting is a DHCP warning, which is due to my access point (terrible access point but no other choice of ISP).

If you have any more suggestion for any other tests I can run I would appreciate it but thanks for all the help you given me. Also for showing me that boot CD, its so useful!
