Cannot search in Computer or in Libraries in File Explorer

I have a very strange issue which makes using Windows Search more difficult.

File Explorer opened to Computer or Libraries > No search. I can type whatever I want to search field, search simply does not start. From the net I found this issue being quite common when you have mapped network drives which are currently offline. This is not my case, when this issue first occurred a week or two ago I had no mapped network drives.

I can search normally all other locations, for instance if I am not sure on which hd a file is located I must search each HD individually as the Computer view search wont start.

Hi, Kari. Kind of strange, eh? This is the only thing I can think of for starters:

SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8

    Hey Kari,

Sorry about the late reply. I missed your post.

Double check to make sure that you have the Windows Search service enabled and set to run and be on Automatic (Delayed Start). If disabled, you will not be able to search in libraries like that.

    Hope this helps some.

Scanning files was the first I did. It finds no issues.

Service is running, started automatically with delay.

Thanks geeks for tips though, still searching...

    Hi there
Just to test -- no problems on my system whatsoever (W8 x-64 enterprise).
    screenshot enc

However the search here is just on the standard Libraries created by Win 8 --I haven't got any USER created libraries so I hven't been able to test that function.

Not sure what would happen to a disk / set of disks assigned to a library if some of them were offline though -- .
What happens if you try and re-allocate the library (you shouldn't lose any data on the individual drives BTW).

    Cheers

    Kari,

You might see if turning off "Windows Search" in Windows Features, apply, restart, and then turn it back on may toggle it to work again.

When it works it works for all libraries, I have a bunch of self created libraries and never had problems searching until this suddenly happened.

As I mentioned, search itself still works perfectly as long as I enter a library, folder or drive. Just these two root level searches are a no go, Computer and Libraries.

Only explanation I can find on net is that on rigs with mapped network drives this can happen when such drive is offline. This is as mentioned not my case.

    Wouldn't like to reinstall.

    Hi there
Perhaps the best bet is to DELETE all these libraries (you won't lose the data) and re-create them or restore your system to the last day it was working properly.

I can't think of anything else -- all my searches work fine and I'm also using a slew of disks as "Spanned Volumes" too.

    Cheers
