the latest version of Movie Maker is very good at producing h.264 mp4 video. Most people want HD material nowadays, and DVD by its very definition is SD. plus, people want the ability to easily post their videos online and the plugins for Movie Maker make it very easy to immediately upload your vids. even today's TVs have USB and Ethernet ports so you can stream your movie from the network or watch movies from your flash drives/HDDs.

all my devices record in HD so it sucks to have to convert it to DVD 480P format. But it is still nice to have the option. However, virtually all DVD burning software (even the free ones) can burn DVD compliant movies. so just publish your movie with the correct format and then use InfraRecorder, ImgBurn, etc. to make your movie.

yeah, it sucks that it doesn't do DVD burning any more. maybe a casualty of not paying for DVD licensing?

Thanks to everyone who posted replies, some really helpful info. I've used the custom save option and set the bitrate so I could get 1 hour movie on 4.7gb DVD. The result is a pretty good def movie which looks and sounds ok on 42 inch home cinema when played through laptop. I burnt the disc just by right clicking the saved file and selecting "send to DVD drive".
