    Replacing Win8 - won't boot from CD

    Hello,

I'm trying to help a friend who bought a Win8 PC, and it has already crashed on him.

When booting, the PC instantly moves into 'preparing automatic recover', then 'diagnosing your PC', then a 3rd line flashes briefly (it's so fast that I can't read it). After that, the PC reboots and goes through the same 3 steps, over and over and over.

I attempted to get the PC to boot from a LiveCD, just to see if I could get *anything* to work. The PC refuses to load it (I've tested 2 different distros on another, working PC -- they work just fine). I tried unplugging the HDD and booting from the CD. The PC just tells me to replace the boot media and try again. Yes, I've changed the PC boot options in the BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD drive first. I've enabled the boot menu -- the only option available is to boot from the hard drive.

I don't have much experience with Win8, and I'm at a complete loss of what to try next. I've spent quite a bit of time searching for a solution, and most people have my (or similar) symptoms, but nobody has a solution except to boot from the Win8 CD and repair. Unfortunately, the recovery CDs were never created. Sadly, he bought it from walmart, and didn't buy an extended warranty. Apparently the base warrenty is a pathetic 14 days (seriously? 14 days? complete BS).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD.
Recovery Drive - Create with USB Flash Drive in Windows 8
System Repair Disc - Create in Windows 8

Boot the Repair USB/CD, & try a Refresh.

    How do a Refresh:

Yeah... there's no CD. It was never created. He'd just as soon get rid of 8 altogether at this point.

then he would have to purchase win7 or use a Linux version of choice .

as for the 14 day warranty that with wal-mart he would have 1year with manufacturer, just need to contact there support desk by phone for details

Use the 64 bit version of ubuntu 12.10 or derivatives.

Live cd hould be fine with efi and secure boot.

Great replacement for 8 if you want to install it.

I've tried knoppix and DSL linux so far, and the computer refuses to boot from them. I think I need to read into UEFI and secure boot a bit more. That may be where my issue is.

Your problem is due to secure boot. in the BIOS disable secure boot and enable legacy boot, and it should allow you to run a livecd.

But it might be better to just get Windows 8 working, as he might like it.

Whelp, I still can't get Win8 to work, as I still don't have the disc. Secure boot is disabled. There is no legacy boot/os option. I managed to get Ubuntu 12.10 to show up in the boot menu, selected install, screen went black. Rebooted, selected the livecd option, went black.

So far, I'm super impressed with UEFI and Win8... :/
