Windows 8 app store is the Achille's heal or cruel joke

Whether you like windows 8 or not, I believe the greatest disappointment is the App store.

While windows 8 needs major improvement with usability features, which Windows Blue won't fix and let's forget about how many apps are available, I believe two major factors are:

1. quality of apps
2. trying to navigate the Windows Store itself

First, I am disappointed in the types of apps that are available, with exception to maybe 15-20, most are junk apps, a duplication of other apps, and honestly some pay for apps that should have been included free to begin with. Lets face it, working with files in Metro is next to useless, and even the payed file manager apps are lacking in my opinion. I have yet to see how to view network drives without going into desktop mode, let alone to actually use them. Then the apps that are available feel like they have been stripped clean, just compare the Skype metro app to the desktop version, it almost seems useless.

Second, trying to find apps is a nightmare, you have your major categories, but those need further refining. With the exception of Games, none of the others have sub-categories. Example; Entertainment should have music, music players, radio, videos, video players, movies, etc.. How about tools, at least have Windows tools, office tools, educational, and so forth. At least, make it somewhat user friendly. Instead their choices are free or payed. what a "crock" of garbage.

Seriously, there are no functional business applications, as with Apple and Android. No real banking tools, or real world tools. There are no real creative tools to speak of, so what's the point?

Windows 8, doesn't even come with the media center. To me it's almost like a cruel joke. They reduce or bury functionality, strip away standard components, and then make it more difficult to use.

They then wonder why it hasn't been successful. I am almost shocked that it is even selling. When I think about it, there isn't a whole lot about it to like.

Surface tablets aren't even 3G or 4G, so why should we embrace this?

If Microsoft is not making an effort to improve things, then why should we support it ?

The Windows 8 App Store is still in its infancy. It took more than 5 years before the iTunes App Store became popular and profitable. And Google Play is just now starting to gain a little momentum. It would be a wonderful world if technology services and products were every thing we wanted and more right out of the box. But unfortunately that's not the world we live in yet.

I have 6 computers, I happen to be using my Windows 8 tablet at the moment (for this forum), I also run Windows 7, XP, Ubuntu, and even have an iPhone and iPad. I have had this tablet about 4 months and it came with Windows 8 which was upgraded to Pro. I even have a copy of Windows 8 Consumer Preview still load in a dual boot machine. And yes, I am going to point out, Microsoft's failings with this. If I don't and others like me, they will continue to put out garbage.

They don't really have anything new here, they are just trying to play catch up. For gods sake what version of iPad is out now? I have lost count.

As for the apps (or lack of), Windows 8 and preview versions have been out for almost 2 years now, when the iPhones and others came out, they truly were brand new, at least Microsoft should know what types of apps people are looking for, and they certainly could have made the app store more functional. What a lack of creativity.

So for those who wish to mock my words, just remember, it is whiners like us that make them create better products. Gee, do we really want to go back to Vista, or better yet how about Windows 3.0.

The app store in not good, no doubt. It will improve over time. I used it once and decided that doing so is not worth my while for now.

The windows app store is not likely to get better any time soon. It is just a not a very fun environment for developers. People who say that it took 5 years for the apple store to become profitable, which I think is a bogus figure, should also know that it took longer than that for Microsoft to even release one.

I think the apps store problem is catch 22. Windows 8 - at least in RT land - does not sell because of the missing apps and the apps developers don't bother to develop any because it does not sell well. They have a much better terrain in Android.

There was a statistic recently (can't find it now) about the apps increase for the MS store compared to Android and the MS nums were dismal. So it is going to be a difficult uphill battle.

I wholeheartedly agree, all of the apps I bought do NOT do any of what they promised to do, and what you have to watch out for are 3rd party facebook, Youtube, even Media Player apps that look like they are legit, but most of them are made by chinese spam-app devs. The worst Apps I wasted 2 bucks on were supposed to open Word and Excel files, but they do not open the files, they UPLOAD them to a remote site. Like Hades if I am gonna upload my private docs to a remote server. I can use FileExplorer on my iPhone to read anything I have on my PCs at home, it logs me right in and I can ooen Word and Excel docs with iWorks apps.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Then don't use the Windows Store. If you have no need for it, don't use it. It's like if someone complained about the Desktop Gadgets in 7 even though they had no need for them, never used them or didn't care for them. Uninstall the apps if you want, they're real easy to. Windows 8 isn't an only WinRT app based OS, that's Windows 8 RT for ARM processors.

But no, you can't really call the Windows Store a failure when it's not even a year old. It took several for apple to get a good return on the ios store, let alone the indirect benefit of using ios on the ipad. I have no idea if google makes money off google play or whatever it once was since android has a lot of free apps.

In the meantime, for those that use the Windows Store apps, THEY will be the ones that will push developers the way they want them to go.

It is mind blowing to scroll through those pretty icons, randomly looking for something of interest. But, for those who find thiss particular aspect irritating, you should ask yourselves how you looked (randomly) for items before the store came along. For example, my favourite page for trying to find something new to play with, was http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=windows 8&rpp=10&searchtype=downloads&filter=platform%3DWindows%7C&filterName=platforms%3DWindows%7C

-- 1900 pages! You have to have some inkling of what you are seeking, otherwise you need a heck of a lot of time!
But, with my low performance capabilities, I ignore the store and google - much more practical. My favourite time killer, in earlier OSs, was backgammon. On my very first installation of Windows 8, I really wanted that back. I googled for "Backgammon app for Windows 8 and, in true fashion, Google came back with, a couple of pages but, four different alternatives.

It's a listing to the game from the Windows Store, which I find to be neat! It's similar to how on Windows Phone when you do a Bing Search, it can actually find you an app or several based on what you're searching. For example, if you search for a movie or an actor, the IMBD app shows up as that has relevant results within that app. App connect is what it is called.

I am the goto guy with my friends, Mr. computer fixit, and when they ask me about Windows 8, is that what you want to tell them "DONT USE IT"? Or the entrepreneur starting a business "DONT USE IT"?

NO I want them to make it better, I want to be able to tell people that it is a viable option. At this point, I can't. And your little story, does not make it a success

Your logic escapes me too...

There are issues with the Windows Store for sure, but really, there are efforts on Microsoft's behalf to highlight the better apps over the crap apps. You usually never see some crap app being promoted in the Windows Store. Basically, never. Even better so, Desktop apps are on the Windows Store, you can get the whole Adobe Creative Suite from it. A good chunk of the Photos section of it is based upon Desktop apps. In the Security section, anti virus software on the Desktop. The difference here is that those Desktop apps have to go through a certification process to make sure they're digitally signed and whatnot.

But then again, if you don't like it, why even use it? I don't see why one would force themselves to use the Windows Store and claim they're being forced to use it, or use the Windows Store and say it's not worthwhile. Don't use it. Simple as that. There shouldn't be any other response to that at this point in time other than that.

Hi there
Most apps IMO are a load of junk whether they are for mobile phones or PC's.
Also there's very little QC and do you really want to riddle your PC with "Apps" devised by people coming home on a Saturday night drunk after a night in the pub. A lot of these "One man" type apps won't exist maybe even a few MONTHS later --what happens when the "developer" just gets fed up.

Apple might have a different system in place but Windows isn't this type of OS -- but it's all to do with generating revenue -- that GHASTLY word "Monetisation".

What the Windows store is hoping to lead people to in future is you don't "Buy" software but only rent it. Office 365 is a start in this process --- not one that I want any part of.

Fortunately for me I'm nearing retirement -- so I could probably keep what I have for the next 20 years and be satisfied with it -- the youngsters have a much more uncertain future with the whole idea of OS's like Windows and the applications it runs.

Cheers
jimbo

If I may ask. How long have you used 8? Do you own a business or have a business degree?

Well, I beta tested 8 for a year, as I stated earlier, I have had my tablet for 4+ months, and I have owned 3 businesses, semi-retired now. Oh, I forgot I bought my mother a windows 8 laptop.

What amazes me, is how some of these people consider improving the App Store as a bad thing. Why wouldn't you want it improved? If they worked for me with these types of attitudes, I would fire them.

It's not my fault, they designed it the way they did. But, then again, some people refuse to believe the obvious.

So what type of credentials do the nay-sayers have? Doesn't matter any way, it won't make them any smarter.

Hi there
Does a Doctorate (Ph.D) in Electrical Engineering from University of London (Imperial College) plus a Masters degree in Mathematics from University of Manchester suffice as someone who is entitled to have a valid opinion on the quality of some of these apps - or even the idea of using these.

My BIG problem with this type of stuff is on how Ms can do any sort of QC on these -- and also for people who say only sell 200 or so copies a month -- does Ms really have all the financial systems in place to pay the developers correctly, handle the differing tax rates in various jurisdictions and debiting people's cards correctly for what is by Ms standards almost trivially small amounts of money.

I also have problems with some of the "Amateur" status of these apps -- if you are buying something for a PC I would suggest you DO need continuity from the developers. On phones people don't seem to worry too much but if you were say having to purchase corporate software you really do need to have properly packaged and supported applictions -- say Ms Office or Photoshop for example. Some companies like Adobe might be OK with submitting their software via the Windows store - but unless you can change (almost impossible IMO) the way Software installs in Windows you can't stop people supplying "Stand alone installable software" from any source.

The Fruit Company has a different philosophy and installing software on Macs has always been done in a proprietary manner -- with Windows it's going to be rather more complicated.

Cheers

Hi there

Also there's very little QC and do you really want to riddle your PC with "Apps" devised by people coming home on a Saturday night drunk after a night in the pub. A lot of these "One man" type apps won't exist maybe even a few MONTHS later --what happens when the "developer" just gets fed up.

I just love it, Jimbo

I am retired. Works for me also!
