Hi!
Can anyone tell me where to go to make programs start in conjunction with the machine starting?
I want Outlook, Word, ACDSee and Google Earth to start with the machine, whilst I make my morning coffee!:)

Hello Harald. Welcome to Eight Forums.

You can copy shortcuts you create to the startup folder.
As an example, I created a shortcut of media player classic and copied the shortcut to:

startup.jpg

Then you can see what is set to start in the task manager from the startup tab

taskstartup.jpg

The OS defaults to the start screen unless you have a metro blocking start menu.
The programs in the startup folder will execute shortly after launching the desktop app.
If your system is defaulted (no start button), then you will not see results until you get to the desktop.
Win + D, desktop tile or other...

I know you want to do this for convenience, but the more major programs you have starting automatically, the longer it will take for the system to boot. But if as you say, you will be getting coffee, yah, but the time it all loads and is ready for input, a cup of coffee is about right.

I used to do this, but it got to be so that it was interfering if I had any problems that needed immediate attention after boot. So now, I let as few items start as possible. Even Antivirus, those can take a few minutes to load an initialise, and you basically can't do anything until they have loaded fully. Instead, I made desktop shortuts in a folder and then shoved the folder to the side so it made a toolbar. Can't do that with Windows 8, but you can still pin em to the taskbar pretty easily, so that's what I do, so they are all there by the Orb of Start 8.

(edit) Ohh - I like how you have MPC HC starting, that's a good program, opens almost instantaneously.

If you are referring to my example, it was just that, as an illustration to make a point.
I have no shortcuts loading at startup on my system. The last time I did something like that was when using Windows 98 or something. I can't remember.

Every program you install nowadays, may load a startup item into the Task Scheduler I don;t see anything stopping him from adding Office programs, it should work fine, I'd give the machine a good 10 minutes to fully boot and load.
