Windows 8 slows to a crawl and freezes (plus boot errors)

I am having a number of problems with my desktop, that I put together myself. I had been running windows 8 for a while, and within the last month I installed a new video card (Nvidia EVGA GTX560ti), and a new SSD (OCZ vertex 4 256GB). While still running Windows 8, I had been playing games, doing a lot of photoshop work....and other various CPU intensive things. I was editing photos one day in photoshop CS5 , and I noticed that the program became somewhat slow all of the sudden (basic tasks that used to be very quick and painless). The program eventually became unresponsive and had to reboot the computer. Upon restart I got all sorts of "boot drive errors", and unreadable boot disk errors. However, these errors only seem to happen randomly. I checked my CPU core temps, and while doing the regular work I do on the computer, all 4 cores averaged about 92 degrees Celsius! I ran a virus scan, for something unrelated, and I checked the temps and they were spiking 98 to 100 Celsius!!!! While im just using the computer regularly they settle around 65-70. But if I do ANYTHING slightly intensive, I could probably cook dinner on my heatsink. I guess my main question is WHY am I getting boot errors, and why do they seem to happen randomly. I suppose the motherboard could be fried, im really not sure. This happened in the past, and reinstalled windows 8. After a couple days, same story. I'm almost positive this is a hardware thing. My first priority is of course to lower the CPU temps however I can. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

From my experience, the Vertex 4 is a rather "meh" SSD that's prone to failures. But that aside, your system should really be shutting down if it's approaching 100C (that's water boiling temp, btw) I know the thermal paste is good to at least 200C but that's still damn hot. What processor do you have? I might just be a bit reserved when it comes to my thermals and i know Intel processors run a bit hotter than their AMD counterparts and do just fine.

It wouldn't hurt to power it down, pop off the heatsink and re-apply some paste and re-seat it. There might not be good heat conductivity.

Also, what do your southbridge temperatures read?

Sounds like you have some excess memory usage. 100c IS very high! You may have a fan problem, I use a water-cooled fan on my Asus M2N with 4400+ AMD Processor. You can download AID64, they have free versions I think you can check all your temps. The hottest thing on my board is my GEforce card, 8400 GS. It;s just a cheapie but I did add extra heat sinking to it. Heat will slow you to a snails pace and will destroy your components as well.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Thanks for the assistance guys. I know this something I should have done right away, but I took the heatsink off the CPU and found it had a thick layer of dust covering all the fins. No way for air to get through well at all. The old paste was almost non-existent. Re-did everything, and now the temps don't go above 65 Celsius (which is somewhat acceptable, better than 92-100).

65C is MUCH better. I'm surprised it was even running at 92-100C.
