Anyone figured out the disappearing restore points problem

I've had this new machine about 10 days. I did a system restore several days ago, and there were several restore points to choose from. I checked the list the morning of 4/7, and there was only one from 4/6, I manually created a check point, and as recently as this morning, it showed check points for 4/6 and 4/7. I just checked again, and there is now only the check point for 4/7. I don't have dual boot, haven't run any defrags, and haven't even put Ccleaner on here yet. My XP machine would add check points every day or so, but I haven't seen any new ones automatically added yet. Does anyone know what I can do?

Have you checked to see how much disk space is allocated for restore points? Control Panel > System > System Protection

Yes. It is set to 1% (7.89GB). That is the way it came out of the box, so I assumed it was sufficient. I've been Googleing around look for a recommendation. Also, I've never seen a restore point labled Automatic Restore Point. One site said there should one everyday, another said every 7 days if not other restore points were created in 7 days.

Correction - I mis-read the configuration screen. The 1% setting gives a me a max of 10GB, and it's using 7.89GB. i don't want to sound dumb, but is that telling me that there is only room for 1 restore point? If they are only automatically created after 7 days, that would explain that too. How big should I make it?

    Hello Jeff,

In addition, checking the Show other restore points box (if available) while doing a system restore will let you also see any older restore points (if available) that are not listed.

For now, you might bump up the max usage size some more if able to see if you are able to have more restore points kept saved.

If you like the free program CCleaner lets you quickly view and/or delete your restore points like in OPTION THREE of the tutorial below.

    Hope this helps,

Hi Brink, I edited my last reply about the same time you responded, so I'm not sure if you saw it. Am I right about the 7.8GB of the 10GB max being the probable cause? Does 7.8GB seem normal for 1 check point. I now about the check box, it went away when it went down to 1 restore point. I haven't put Ccleaner on this computer yet. I was a little concerned, because one posting elsewhere said it wipes out the restore points.

You could try bumping the allocated space up temporarily (i.e., 7.89 GB might be limited in your case--but it seems sufficient to me). And, it seems to me that you should see an automatically created restore point at least occasionally even with 7.89 GB. Not sure why you don't.

On my old HP lappy, I have 5.59 GB allocated for restore points. I checked to see my restore points. I found only one automatically created one. I created another called "Test." When I looked again, both retore points were present. However, there still appeared to be room for more. It seems possible that only the most recently created automatic restore point is available provided all manually created restore points have been "dropped out." I haven't created a restore point manually in a long time.

Note that the above mentioned possibility does not seem logical. In this regard, I have noted what seems to me to be "strangeness" when it comes to restore points on Win8 for quite awhile.

    Jeff,

Depending on how much free space you have, you might set the "Max usage" slider to about 20 GB for now just to see if you retain more restore points or not.

This will help to determine if something else may be deleting them. Do you have any utility programs installed that you run that may be deleting them unknowingly?

I just bumped it up to 2%, which it says is 18.44GB. This is strange, when I looked at the screen before, it said 7.89% usage (I wrote it down), 1% (10GB) max. When I went back to change it, it said 7.95% usage, and 1% (9.22GB) max.

Still wondering if that much usage is normal for 1 restore point.

Go ahead and install the free program CCleaner to see how many restore points it shows that you have for another point of reference.
