Solved Windows management files are missing

Hi second post, been using win8 since early dec with absolutely no problems and loved it...... Until yesterday.
It did an update initially of one file and then of 15 (this on a Monday ...but I hadn't shut it down in a while so figured it was just catching up on patch Tuesday stuff).
When it finished and rebooted it won't run properly.
I get a lack screen with the task bar in grey at the bottom of the screen but both are empty.
I have previously installed the pokki start menu and initially the pokki symbol was there and using that I managed to get into the control panel and thence to the computer management screens and on one of them there was a message displayed "windows management files are missing".
By right clicking on the task bar I can get to the task manager but it shows no running processes under the processes tab.
Tried re installing from my DVD but so far no good unable to get it to oot from the DVD drive, also tried downloading the windows defender offline file onto a USB but again can't seem to get it to run from the USB drive.
Already well beyond my capability and would appreciate any help anyone can give.

Back your data files up off computer. You could try uninstalling the updates. You also could try a system restore and, then, sfc /scannow (may need to run multiple times--say 3). No luck with these? Then, a refresh may be in order.

Refresh Your PC in Win8—Attempts to solve system problems by replacing system files without affecting user data files. Such files still should be backed up. Installed programs will have to be reinstalled except those from the Windows Store. A list of uninstalled programs is provided on desktop. Your personalization settings will be maintained. System settings will be set to defaults. A Windows.old folder will be created at C:. You can delete it once you have everything you want from it--Windows.old Folder - Delete in Windows 8.

On sfc /scan now I get a message "windows resource protection could not start the repair service"

Thanks again for the help - eventually managed to re-install W8 after getting the pokki start menu working again and all is well. Ran the above checks on my discs and both reported as OK.

Just have to hope it doesn't happen again.

Thanks again.
