My laptop (Windows 8) encounters slow boot-up and shutdown time yesterday suddenly. The boot-up time was usually at around 23-28 seconds (fast start up) and the shutdown time was not more than 30 seconds/ 20 seconds (didn't pay much attention to this shutdown time) before yesterday but now the boot-up time is 2.5 or sometimes even 5 minutes & shutdown takes about 10-15 minutes. When I log into the windows, it will freeze on the start screen for about 2 minutes before I can click & view the desktop. When shutting down, the 'shutting down' phrase on the screen will disappear shortly (normal) but it leaves the black screen for about 10-15 minutes (as stated above) to completely shutdown the laptop (I know as the fan is still turning & there are some blinking lights).
I can provide the system event log if it is needed.

What happens to my hdd and how to solve it?

First things first, BACK UP YOUR PERSONAL DATA. This should be done as soon as possible!

After that, try running the Check Disk in Windows. To do this, go to Computer, hit Properties on the Ribbon, hit the Tools tab, and hit Check. If it finds errors and prompts for a restart, do so. But keep in mind, this could possibly screw up a system file as it may move files from a damaged sector to an ok one. You may need to get a reinstall disk or .iso image of Windows 8 handy just in case. This reminds me, did you do an install of Windows 8 over 7 and started to get these issues?

If the Check Disk run is successful, everything should be normal. If it runs ok for a while, and these issues occur again, you have possibly two options. One is just to get a brand new hard drive if possible. It probably has sector/block issues. Or, you can do a thorough reformat of the drive and try again fresh. I've had instances were a disk would have bad sectors get somewhat repair after doing a few thorough reformats (but I also did many wipe down passes in a certain hard drive utility).

In reply to Coke Robot:

Thanks for your reply and advice. I have already backup ed the important files.
No errors were found from the error checking. However, when I do the S.M.A.R.T test again, the report is same as the report given at the link above.
I have been using the dual boot system (Windows 8 & Windows Vista Home Premium, the later is the original windows) since 4 months ago and it didn't have any problems. But the situation (mentioned in the post) came up on yesterday though I did't install any programs/ make any changes to the windows. And I can't even open the apps originated from the Windows 8 such as Messaging, Camera, Travel, Mail, Picture, Video, Music, Finance and others since a few months ago but Store can still be accessed.

Hi

First, Run , type in the code and then hit Inter :"rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks"
This makes the boot files you are testing and the first to be built to work properly

But do not rely on the code
You can improve your boot time with Bootvis.msc
Download BootVis Free

!The next run !Trace menu option and select the Optimize System will restart the system during this process a few times !( If you did not restart after you run the program again and choose that option )
If you want to find out exactly how many seconds of your boot time is the Trace menu, click on Next Boot + Next Driver and click next to restart and after you have logged in and running by the stats you'll see that the program What is.

Or

you should use the DVD HBCD for repiar HDD(The problem is fully resolved)

After I have typed in the code and then hit enter :"rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks" (Case Sensitive) it did't come up anything.
After the installation of BootVis, I can't open it as it comes up a message box- Title: BootVis.exe - Entry Point Not Found Message: The procedure entry point WmiOpenTraceWithCursor could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\(Programs's location).
How to use HBCD from Download Hiren to repiar HDD? I can't google the tutorial, can you give me one? I know how to boot from USB/ DVD. Thanks for your help.

The DVD HIREN into your DVD-ROM and then rebooting the system will automatically load the application will appear in the DOS environment and the tools you can use.
You can work very well and have no problem .
NOTIC:
"The CD does not have all the necessary tools , but DVD HIREN all the features and tools are included .
HIREN can either continue with the CD ."

Hmmm... If you do have an actual SMART test failure, that would be fixed with a new hard drive. I've had a drive do that recently, except the BIOS stopped the boot as the SMART test on that drive failed. And Windows also said so too...
