Can't shut down or restart

Can't shut down & other problems

When attempting a shut down, the process "Windows Logon Application" uses 100% of one CPU core, and the computer does not shut down. When I try to end the task, it asks if I want to abandon unsaved data and shut down. This is happening every time I go into Windows now. I used the reset button last time, and again it wouldn't shut down. I had to hold in the power button for 10 seconds to turn it off, but I can't keep doing that. Already had a look at power options.

Hello Aeed, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Are you closing and saving any windows that you have open before shutting down the PC? If not, then that could cause your PC to hang at shut down while it waits on the window(s) to be forced closed.

If so, then turn off Fast Startup as a test to see if that may be the issue.
Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Yes, I'm closing all windows. Not that it should matter, since Windows 7 allows you to shut down even if windows are open. I tried turning off fast startup then shutting down. It goes to a blue screen with the text "Shutting down" and stays there indefinitely. I ended up hitting the reset button. Turned fast startup back on now.

Sure, Windows 8 will still shut down even if you left something open. It's just that if you do, then it may cause it to hang at shut down if the program ignores the request to close to be able to finish shutting down.

If you have a restore point available dated before this started, then you could do a quick system restore using that restore point to hopefully fix this for you.

Just tried two system restore points. The problem persists across both. I've returned to the latest state.

Clean Boot is not a clean install or to install Windows 8 at all. Instead, it's for troubleshooting.

Please click on tutorial link in my post above for more details. :)

Ok tried the clean boot method. No luck. Any other steps you'd recommend to try & solve this? Quick unrelated question: I have an SSD, can I disable superfetch in msconfig, or should I disabled it some other way? (I've already set EnablePrefetcher and EnableSuperfetch in the registry to 0.)

Try doing it.
After turning off the computer, try turn it on again, check on the Event Log to the time of shutdown.

Aeed,

You could disable the SuperFetch service in msconfig if you like, but since you have already disabled SuperFetch in the registry, it's not going to make any difference.

MrShowdown post is not a trick. He's just recommending to shut down, start the PC, then check your shut down time in the Even Viewer log.

At this point, I'm afraid you may be looking at to refresh or reset Windows 8 to fix this. :(

Was using the default skin. Changed it to EF Smooth and it seems to be working now. (Firefox 20 with NoScript - scripts on eightforums.com allowed) Okay on to the post:

I've found the source of the problem, and it's bad. Very, very bad. As in, I may not be able to use any operating system except choosing between going back to XP or switching to Linux.

I did a refresh, and started documenting absolutely everything I did, restarting and shutting down then doing cold boots fairly frequently until the problem reoccurred. Turns out it was a registry edit I had read about some time ago and performed:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
BootExecute = autocheck autochk *
changed to:
BootExecute = autocheck autochk /k:C /k:D /k:E /k:F /k:G /k:H /k:I /k:J*

I made this change to stop Windows 8 from doing unwanted, unwarranted, uncontrolled disk repairs during startup. I had this problem with my last two drives which is the reason I made sure to make this registry change on the new SSD as well. The one is a 250GB Samsung 7200rpm drive with Windows 8 installed, and the other is a 1TB WD Green with XP installed. I set the 250GB drive up with Windows 8 on a different computer, then moved it into my current computer so that I could dual-boot Windows XP and 8. Pretty soon Windows 8 wanted to "repair" my XP drive, and every time I tried booting into Windows 8, it would try to repair, with no option to skip or cancel. I was resigned to booting to XP for a while, but I made the mistake of leaving the Windows 8 drive on default boot priority (I was using F8 to get into XP). Windows 8 slipped through my fingers one day, and started the repair. I stopped it (reset button) before 30 seconds had passed, but the damage had been done. XP no longer boots, it just BSODs.

Since then I've found out about this registry change in Windows 8 to force it to never attempt a drive repair on boot. So far so good. Except my 250GB drive mysteriously stopped shutting down, and I did a Win8 refresh. Now I'm on the SSD (with no other drive plugged in) and you know the rest.

I refuse to repair the XP drive until I've done a full backup (because I know darn well that a full repair using Windows 8 will utterly destroy XP) and I plan on using my XP install disk to repair XP. But this is going to happen again. Windows 8 is going to keep screwing around with repairs on boot that I cannot control. The only way to stop it I've seen thus far is to use the registry modification I listed above, but I can't shut down after that change.

Oh and for the record - My 1TB WD Green drive with XP on did not need a repair, there is nothing wrong with the drive, it is in perfect health, I have already checked.

My ultimate goal is to use the SSD for Windows 8 and the 1TB for XP and doubled up as a storage/backup drive. The other 250GB will be moved back to another computer as a test drive.

Other, somewhat unrelated problems I'm having with Windows 8:
I have disabled the BITS service in computer management, and set the startup type to disabled. Something keeps re-enabling it. How do I hunt down what is re-enabling it and stop it? I don't want BITS service running. Ever.

Thanks for the help so far. This operating system is just so frustrating. Bashing my head against a wall would be almost less painful.

What do you mean? As in, make a backup? The install is brand new. There's literally nothing on the drive to back up save for some files I didn't want to bother copying off my flash drive again.

Well, you said "I really don't want to install Windows 8 again. I think I'm leaning towards doing a refresh, so that I can at least keep my personal files." I replied by saying "personally, I would never do any sort of installation/reinstallation without being backed up off computer. So, I was talking about backing up your "personal files" off computer.

Why would you disable BITS? It may cause Windows Update to stop working.

I have 166MB per day cap. I can't have BITS downloading 300MB per day without my permission (and it does, or more). Moreover, I want control every single thing that goes through my connection. For instance, this is why I won't install Chrome, because it installs updates and there is no way to stop it inside the program. If I want to do updates, I will always do them myself, manually.

BITS doesn't even tell me what it is downloading or ask for permission. I have automatic updates disabled, so it can't be downloading updates. My question then, what is it downloading, and why should I let it?
