Cannot boot from DVD

I was working on a friend's new Lenovo all-in-one yesterday, and I was unable to boot it from a dvd. I pressed F12 upon reboot and got to the boot order menu, and the DVD drive was not in the list. I rebooted into Setup, selected the tab that showed the boot devices, and it showed two devices that were "excluded from boot order", one of them was the dvd. I could not see any way to add it back into the boot order. Any ideas how to get it to boot from a DVD?

Thanks

What model is it? Did you look through the entire setup menu? Depending on what DVD you're trying to boot (I'm guessing Windows 7 - it seems to be popular for people to boot Windows 7 disks on a Win 8 computer), you'll have to disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Boot.

If your friend's machine is installed under UEFI (i.e., usually the case if OEM preinstalled Win8 machine), then boot to his UEFI settings and go from there: [h=1]UEFI Firmware Settings - Boot to from inside Windows 8.[/h]

I expect to be back in front of that computer sometime next week. I will check these things out.

Thanks for the help.

In the mean time I'd reccomend booking up on secure boot. Windows 8 changed a few things that you should be aware of.

What type of DVD are trying to boot?

As you have a UEFI/BIOS firmware, has the DVD have UEFI support?

It was a Norton Ghost 15 boot disk. (I've been calling it a DVD but I guess it is really a cd).

Yes, Ghost is not compatible for installation, but I learned on the Norton forum that Ghost 15 from a boot disk works ok with Win 8, and I've been using it successfully on another computer.

My problem here is that I cannot get the computer to boot from a disk, any disk. The drive seems to be excluded from the boot order. I will be looking into the Secure Boot issues that were suggested above.

Norton Ghost 15 uses WinPE2 which will no boot on a new PC with Pre-installed Windows 8, SSR uses WinPE4 which will boot on a new PC with Pre-installed Windows 8.

You can only install Norton Ghost as a 30 day try only.
