Solved How do I put my laptop into hibernation?

One thing I noticed about Windows 8 is that there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to put my laptop into hibernation. For clarification, this means that that everything that is loaded into the RAM is written to a file on the HDD. The device then fully powers down. Upon pressing the power button again, the device will resume, similar to the way it does in sleep mode, but without have the power drain associated with storing the windows session in the volatile memory.

I went into the power settings and enabled hybrid sleep for both plugged in and on battery, but when I clicking on the power option in settings (by using the shortcut Win + I or by moving your mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen) there is only an option to put it into sleep mode. I know that it isn't doing hibernation because when it goes into hibernation, you must press the power button to bring it out of hibernation. I want it this way to reduce battery drain and to prevent accidental resuming if the laptop somehow opens while in my backpack...

Go to the Control Panel - More settings, then to the Power Options in the old Control Panel. Or type Power Options into Search on start menu- go to Settings at the bottom there. Click on "Choose what the Power button does" on the left.

Scroll down to the bottom, and tick the "Show Hibernate" box. Now it will show up in the Start menu - Settings, under "Power".



*If the settings are grayed out there, click on the "Change settings that are currently unavailabe" at the top, then change it.

Where did you see the option for "Change settings that are unavailable"? Here is a screen shot of the menu I had. I didn't see this option... power options.PNGCould you post a screenshot of your menu?

Hmm, not sure why I have it and you don't.

Although I've installed my Win 8 on a physical desktop machine, and I see you have it on a laptop. Maybe that is what makes the diff? Also I am using a Local account, as opposed to a Live ID account. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not.

It's also accesable for me through the Require a Password on Wakeup link in Power Options as well.

It isn't because it is a laptop. I checked on my desktop and the option is missing on this one too. Also I don't think local client has anything to do with it because my laptop is a local client (my desktop is live). I checked on the "password on wake" and it also is missing that option. What is your build number? Mine is Build 8102.

I'm running the x64 version. That seems to be the only difference that I can tell...Seems like an odd difference though....

Strange. I don't know then. Maybe try restoring the Power plans back to default from the power options advanced window.

I see reference to users that turned off User Account Control didn't have it in Vista, and turning it back on made it reappear, but I tried it on my build and there was no difference. Was still there regardless, even after reboot.

OK, I went to the link you provided and tried several things. I created a new power plan: no luck. I reset the power settings to default via command line: no luck. Then I tried turning on User Account Control again. At that point, I restarted and some updates that I had downloaded earlier finished installing. So either those updates did the trick or it was the user account control.

So, you're saying you now have the change settings link there now? Probably the User account control.

Well, yes the initial problem is solved, but now a much bigger problem has arisen. I tried hibernation on my laptop and it is not able to come out of it without hanging on the screen that says "Windows Developer Preview" (before the new BCD menu comes up). The animation does not play. I tried running bootrec.exe and fixing the mbr etc. Nothing. I tried disabled hybrid boot. Nothing. I guess this is one of those wrinkles that they will hopefully fix in the next build.

(Also, as a side note, my laptop froze yet again while typing this. It only seems to freeze on my laptop. I can leave my desktop running all day without the problem.)

Perhaps that's why it's not selected by default...just a thought.

This is an easy one

Freelancer, all you need to do is go into control panels, then to power options, and tick the box mark "Hibernate", and set the
time you want to wait before your system goes into hibernation. NOW remembering that is in the "Advance" section. :geek:

I "Enabled" "Hibernate" in gpedit, went to "Change unavailable settings" and hibernate is still missing... all I have are "Sleep: and "Lock".

Hibernate is not available and I did reboot. Another setting that I discovered missing is "Delete power plan"; I created a custom and had to delete if in the registry.
