Something keeps waking up my PC and I cant figure out what

I have tried all the basic troubleshooting and I just cannot figure this out.

I have checked the Windows system logs. The power trouble shooter says Wake Source "Unknown"

I have turned off the "Allow this computer to wake up for updates" settings.

I have run the command line stuff to find out what has woken up the PC and what is allowed to wake it up:

powercfg –lastwake

powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

The first says unknown, the second says nothing can wake it up.

I have turned off the Allow Wake Timers option in power settings.

I have gone through the device manager and turned off the allow this device to wake the PC on the network card and others.

But its still waking up by an "Unknown" source. It's not the same time every night. I am going crazy with this.

Was the mouse and keyboard unticked in device manager?

I'll check those when I get home tonight, but it's a wireless mouse and keyboard. Even when I have turned them both off and unplugged the usb receiver from the machine, it still wakes up. Wouldn't that prevent any signal from making it back to the system?

I don't know, but I would go thru all your advanced settings from power options to see if anything else could stop the wakeup.

Check this thread out: Devices - Allow or Prevent to Wake Up Computer - Windows 7 Help Forums.

Thats the command I ran, the one that lists what can wake up the PC.

Mine comes back saying nothing can and then in the system log it says wake source is "Unknown"

It's probably the automatic scheduled maintenance update.

Windows 8 automatically configures a "Regular Maintenance" event in TaskScheduler to run at 3:00 AM every day. After initial installation of Window 8, Windows Update is preconfigured to initiate the regular maintenance task and wake event to ensure that it is run.

To prevent the Regular Maintenance task from waking the machine at 3:00am, go to Action Center / Automatic Maintenance and disable the checkbox for “Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer at the scheduled time”.

I see; sorry to not read closely enough to realize I suggested something you already tried.

That also has been turned off for some time now.

Why wouldnt the log tell me anything? Unknown is a pretty weak answer for Windows to report what is waking it up.

I have also checked the bios, all the wake timers in there are turned off.

Yesterday I unplugged everything from the PC, even the network wire from the router and there is no wireless card in there.

At 10:27 it popped back to life.

Again the reason for the wake was listed as "Unknown" in the system log.

WHAT IS THIS MAGIC THAT IS WAKING UP MY PC!?!

Do you have office installed? I had the exact same problem and it took me a long time to get to the bottom of it. Turns out it was some obscure office updater, you can find it in the scheduler. I am not at my pc at the moment so I can't give you the exact name to look for. As soon as I get back I'll update my post.

I don't have Office installed but I will look at the scheduler to see if anything is in there that could be causing this.

Haven't looked there yet.

There is nothing in the scheduler, at least that I could find. Should I be looking through the scheduler library or just on the top tab?

Anyway, PC is still waking up. I have to now shut it down fully to keep it from powering on. So far nothing I have done has been able to stop it. Both Sleep and Hibernation have the machine randomly turn on at all times of the day.

Lets think out the box for a sec..

You disabled wake on magic packets

did you check wake on pattern match?

(I know you have the net cable unplugged, but pls check it anyway)

The net card could be damaged in a way where its picking up spurious EM signals either from your PC itself or nearby.

If its not too big of a hassle, remove the network card overnight and keep everything else unplugged as well such as the KB and mouse.

If the NIC is built in then disable it .

Lets go ghost hunting!

It may be some kind of virus or rootkit? Try TDSSkiller and Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit. Seeing as you have all of the legit ways for Windows to wake blocked off, time to look at all the illegitimate ways for this to happen.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Okay so here is where I am now, I just disabled the built in audio and network port on the motherboard, put W8 into hibernation, and unplugged everything but the power cord. It's just a case sitting at an angle from where it normally is and nothing else but the power. Now we wait to see when it wakes up.

As for virus or rootkit, I doubt it but I'll run the scans anyway if it decides to come back online again after this.

Is the pattern match part in the same power menu for the device?

It woke up.

Nothing plugged in, NIC disabled, and it woke up.

Pushed the power button to put it to sleep again last night at 11. By 6 this morning it was awake again.
