How to get Shortcuts in Win8 not put the suffix "shortcut"

In Win8, what does one need to do, so that when one creates a shortcut, it does not have "shortcut" added to the end of the name?

Of course one can rename the shortcut and delete that suffix, but simpler it they were not created that way from the outset.

I managed to stop that behavior in WinXP and Win7, but I forget how, and I don't know if it is done the same way in Win8 anyhow.

By the way, I do not mind the little arrow on shortcut icons, a little reminder that it is a shortcut (but no need for "shortcut" to be added to the name.)

Also, if I create a shortcut on my WinXP computer, it does not add a file extension. For instance, if I create a shortcut to a file named "program.exe", the shortcut in XP will just say "Program". On my Win8 computer though, the shortcut is called program.exe.shortcut.

I don't remember if it was that way in XP by default, or whether I did some tweak years ago. Although I do have Explorer set to show file extensions, I don't need a shortcut to include the extension, as well as no suffix "shortcut".

Is there a tweak in Win8 to have the default shortcut not include the word "shortcut" at the end, and not include the extension of the file linked to?

Thank you in advance.

I'm not on my Windows 8 PC at the moment but it sounds like you have explorer set to show extensions. Go to "Folder Options" in Control Panel and look to see if "hide extensions for known file types" is checked. If it's not check it and see if that fixes things for you.

Alphanumeric, I do not need to check that. I KNOW that I have Windows Explorer set to show extensions, and I want it to do so.

However, I don't need the file extension added to a shortcut. Even more so, I don't need the word "shortcut" added to a shortcut.

Thank you.

You're welcome and you can use the link that what Shawn added in my post, download the reg file and double click to merge into the registry. It'll do exactly what the screenshot shows.

BTW, thanks Shawn for updated it.

Hi there
C'mon guys -- haven't you ever heard of RTFM. Forget all these REGEDITS and "Geeky stuff" -- If I had my way judging by a lot of comments on this Forum I would NOT ALLOW ANY I.T GURU NEAR ANY VERSION OF W8 as they all seem to get hopelessly muddled and look at the W7 way of doing it or at some weird indecipherable script involving convoluted registry edits.

Here's the simple way -- no tweaks -- just using BOG STANDARD Windows.

1) Get into the start screen.

2) if you don't see the application as a tile then just type the name for example WORD (for Ms Office Word). (You don't need to use the search -- just type when the start screen appears - you don't even have to move the cursor to an input area - just type).

3) From the tile or from the application you typed directly RIGHT MOUSE CLICK. On the bottom bar that appears click on OPEN FILE LOCATION . File explorer will now list the file location.

4) Right mouse click again on this file -- then you'll see Send to desktop - Create short cut.

Now you'll get an ICON on your desktop which you can manipulate just like you've always done with previous releases of Windows -- you can change the Icon, rename the short cut or whatever.

Scr shots enclosed

Cheers
jimbo

You are making an assumption that the link is already existed somewhere in the PC so you can do the search and the great 4 steps above and then rename icon, change icon ...

Please try it with a portable program (one that does not require installation) and there's no link created and please let us know if your way is working. Until then, please stop telling us "RTFM"

I know it works and I can do it in 1, 2 steps just by right click & hold then move to where I want the shortcut, not even have to click "Send To.." . The question is he does not want to have the string "Shortcut" tagged on at the end as the name of the shortcut. Unless you use some utility that does the tweaking or use the reg file that Shawn has provided which in turn change the value mentioned above. There's always be a string "Shortcut" tagged on to the name.

Hey I have this problem. Puts "-shortcut" on every shortcut I make.... renaming them is such a waste of time. I tried the solution above but to no avail.

I don't have that "link" value under Explorer key. I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro x64. Also all info online shows this exact approach for Windows 7, but I can't find how to do this for Windows 8.1 (maybe it did work for Win 8)

Hello voldermarz, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The tutorial above also works for Windows 8.1 as well. If you like, you could use OPTION ONE to do it automatically for you. :)
