There is definitely something not working properly with Windows Movie Maker 2012. As a test, I just installed it on a HP Laptop which is running Windows 8 64-bit, easily meets the recommended minimum system requirements and has the latest ATI Radeon graphics drivers installed, and it also won't run. It comes up with the same error as in your screenshot.

"Sorry, Movie Maker canít start. Make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements before trying to start Movie maker again, and then try to update the driver for your video card if Movie Maker still doesnít start."

Strange. I'm not sure what's causing it exactly, but there's presumably some sort of compatibility issue between Windows Movie Maker and the graphics driver somewhere, especially as it worked OK on Windows 8 for 'WHS' when he tried it.

Although not ideal, as a 'work-a-round' I found that it will open OK if you open it in Windows 7 compatibility mode. If you right click on the Movie Maker icon on the Start Page, then go to 'open file location' you will then be able to right click the shortcut link, go to compatibility tab and select 'Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 7'. Surprised to see this from Microsoft software TBH.

Yeah right, on my system the Movie Maker works perfextly as you can see in the little clip below. But I remind you that I run Windows 8 in a VMware Player virtual partition. Maybe that makes things easier.

Should I contact Microsoft about this problem?

Does not hurt, but I doubt that you get a useful answer. What makes me wonder is that you don't seem to be the only member with that problem.

Did you ever have Windows 7 on that system and did the WLMM work there.

Also did you try the Windows 7 compatibility suggestion that Arc made.

I run the latest Windows Movie Maker and it works fine. I have the ATI HD4670 but I'm using the ATI driver that came with Windows 8 rather than the Legacy 12.6 driver from AMD because the Legacy 12.6 driver was buggy and broke the HDCP/DRM apps. However, AMD has released the Legacy 13.1 driver for legacy cards (the 2000, 3000, and 4000 series) but I haven't had a chance to test that yet.

Yeah, it happens with 13.1 (Catalyst Software Suite 13.1 is what I was using above).
