I think you will need to do at least a refresh.

Refresh Your PC in Win8—Attempts to solve system problems by replacing system files without affecting user data files. Such files still should be backed up off computer. Installed programs will have to be reinstalled except those from the Windows Store. A list of uninstalled programs is provided on desktop. Your personalization settings will be maintained. System settings will be set to defaults. A Windows.old folder will be created at C:. You can delete it once you have everything you want from it--Windows.old Folder - Delete in Windows 8.

Good luck on your reinstall. Should be fine at least to start with. It would be very hard to guess what when wrong.

I recommend one thing for sure. Be generous with the space you allow for creating system-restore points and make frequent restore points. I especially recommend you make one both before and after installing new software--especially if it is suspect in any way. I also recommend that you not try potential harmful things if you are highly uncertain about what their outcomes will be.

I did a fresh format and install of Windows 8 64 Bit Pro. Sorry but I couldn't live without a start button so I have installed the Start8 start menu which is great. I try sometimes not to use it but find metro frustrating to find programs as I have many. I will use Metro for apps only and desktop of serious computing.
