Try QDIR. You can open side by side or 4 windows at one time. Found it here.

I want to be able to open several windows in file explorer without being needed to right click> open in a new window everytime I need to open another folder. Its pretty tedious and naging.

If I understand your question . Go to Control Panel , open Folder Options . Try the Open each folder in its own window option on the General tab and / or the Launch folder windows in a seperate process option on the View tab .

I'm not sure on that one . I have just the Launch folder windows in a seperate process option on the View tab selected and pic's , excel , word and text doc's open in seperate windows . But some files will open and replace the original window . I really have no idea why . There seems to be no pattern to the diferences .
    good luck........j

Oh, now I know what you mean. The "automatic" word threw me. I have the same annoyance on both PC's and Macs. I see you have some replies now--specific to your question. Good luck doing what you want. If I run into something I'll let you know.

I'd recommend downloading QT Tab bar (a google search should get you there).
It allows you to open multiple tabs in explorer, and you can open up new tabs easy just by clicking the mouse wheel, so if your in your documents folder you can just mouse click your pictures folder and it opens up in a new tab. It even supports dragging files to the tabs so you can move or copy them there. It makes file management much easier.

The programme also adds some extra buttons but these can be easily disabled (I do not use them)

Here is a screen shot of what my setup looks like with multiple tabs.

I would post a link to the programme but I am not sure if I am allowed to? (admin can you confirm?)

    It's free by the way
